Gunners ready to step up chase for Montpellier fowrad

|

Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud is said to be on Arsenal’s January shopping list amid interest from Newcastle, who have sent scouts to keep a close eye on the player. However, it is now being reported by French media that the striker would prefer a move to the north London club.

After making an instant impact in his debut season, finishing as top goal scorer with 33, Giroud picked up from where he left off, with 11 goals in just 14 appearances being the highlight of his current season after he was signed from French Ligue 2 side Tours. His brilliant run of form recently earned him his first call up to the French senior side and came on as a substitute against USA last month with National coach Laurent Blanc believing the 25-year-old could soon be a regular.

Montpellier may have a battle to hold onto their prized asset and are thought to be holding out for a bid in the region of £10 million because of all the interest. Though reports suggest Arsenal could offer French defender Sebastien Squillaci as part of the deal, a player who never really lived up to his expectations at the club.

If we do sign Giroud, I think he would certainly sort out our firepower problem. French strikers always seem to be at home at Arsenal, and maybe he could be the player who could take Van Persie’s role when the Dutchman is in need of a rest, which could be very soon.
