Could FC Gabala’s loss prove to be Arsenal’s gain?

Having managed Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth in the past, Tony Adams ended his managerial reign at FC Gabala earlier this week, having been in charge of the Azerbaijan club for 18 months.

It is believed the Arsenal legend left his post because of  family reasons. His assistant, former Tottenham and England defender Gary Stevens, is expected to take over.

Adams said:

‘I came to Gabala with big ambitions, wanting to build a strong club and share experiences. It has been an interesting time and hoped that I could achieve something here.

‘However, due to family problems, I have to leave the club. It is hard to leave the management and players, but family is more important to me.’

Gabala finished just outside the top six last season with players like journeyman striker Deon Burton and former Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith in the squad. Though he did not reach his goals, club president Tale Heydarov says he was happy with the 45-year-old’s work:

‘Largely thanks to Adams, Gabala took a big step forward.’

The former England centre-back was highly praised by his players and the clubs board, as FC Gabala officials thanked Adams for his hard work, saying he helped the club make massive strides forward. But recent results showed they hadn’t been in the best of form, with just one win in their last seven games they sit in sixth with just 15 points from the first 12 games of the new season.

In my opinion, FC Gabala’s loss could be Arsenal’s gain. what else could be better than having one of, if not, the greatest defenders in English league football return to the club he made his name at, taking the role as a defensive coach and bring back the Arsenal defensive system that could catch anyone offside with their eyes closed.

Whether he does decide to leave the managerial life for coaching remains to be seen, but all we can hope for is that he does choose to return to Arsenal, as having a few of the club greats as coaches would really do wonders for The Gunners.
