Can Wenger emulate Fergie’s achievements?

‘I just want to make it through the season.’

This was Arsene Wenger’s statement when asked whether he would like to emulate his rival manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who celebrated 25 years with Manchester United, insisting he’ll just be happy to make it to the end of the current season.

Wenger endured his worst start to a Premier League campaign since he took over at Arsenal in 1996, a run which led to trigger-happy fans calling for his head before steadying the ship with a run of positive results.

Even though Wenger is the Premier League’s longest serving manager after Fergie, he is still not optimistic of following in Sir Alex’s footsteps.

Asked whether he could do at Arsenal what Fergie has done for United, the Frenchman said:

‘The distance is a bit far, that would be 10 more years.’

‘I am already happy if I make this year a good season after all of this!’

Wenger added that his rival has made history for United. He said:

‘All you can say is that it is remarkable through the quality and the consistency.’

‘It is exceptional as well because I don’t know anybody at the top level who has done 25 years at the top level with the same club. Certainly never, anybody will do it again.’

Maybe Wenger is right not to look too far ahead of himself as he tries to sort the club out and continue to save our season. If Wenger did stay with Arsenal for 25 years, I believe he could do for us what fergie has done for United and bag us those all-important trophies with, as he put it, ‘through the quality and the consistency’, which he himself has been unable to do because of his inability to strengthen the squad with similar players to those that leave.

  • Ross says:

Wenger has already surpassed Fergies achievements. Wenger himself summed it up nicely – ‘Some teams run on petrol, others run on sweat’.

Are you having a laugh? I can’t stand Old Red Face, but with his win-at-all-costs approach Wenger could never begin to come close to achieving the same level of accomplishments.
