Arsenal legend David O’Leary insists The Gunners must keep in form Dutch striker Robin van Persie fit if they are to continue their improved form this season after enduring a disastrous start to it in a run that saw them pick up one point from their opening three matches.
Tottenham’s victory over Arsenal at the start of October proved to be the turning point, as Arsene Wenger’s side have been in fine form ever since, with Van Persie being the main architect.
Van Persie is currently the top scorer in the Premier League with 11 goals, and former Highbury favourite O’Leary says the success of the Arsenal’s season rests firmly on the striker’s shoulders:
‘They have to keep Van Persie fit, that’s the bottom line for Arsenal.
‘He is a fantastic goal scorer and the only problem with him is his track record with injuries.
‘If you look at his record he’s had injuries every season and they have been bad and long-term and Arsenal have suffered from that.
‘He’s come on in the last few games and done his magic. Arsenal don’t have the same cutting edge (without him).’
I have to say I agree with him on this one. Yes we have players like Gervinho who can score, but other than him we don’t have many players who can bag us 2 or more goals a game. Walcott has his moments, Arshavin is still finding his form and the finishing ability of our midfielders is way better than what we have seen them showcase these last few weeks.
With the internationals already underway all we can hope for is that our main man doesn’t pick up an injury, as we all know this could have such a massive impact on our squad as well as our season ahead.
