Arsenal are reportedly interest in signing Chilean striker Eduardo Vargas, but could face competition from La Liga outfit Villarreal.

It is understood Arsene Wenger will dip his toes into the winter market in search of a striker to lift some of the goal burden off red-hot Robin van Persie and Vargas, who currently plays for Universidad de Chile, has appeared on the Frenchman’s radar, according to talkSPORT.

The 21-year-old, who is rated at around £5 million, is regarded as one of the brightest young talents currently operating in Chile.

However, The Gunners look likely to face competition for Vargas’ signature from Villarreal, who are reportedly looking for a replacement for Giuseppe Rossi, who is expected to be out of action for around six months after damaging knee ligaments.

A.C Milan were previously linked with a move for the Chilean international.
