Per Mertesacker believes it’s absolutely ‘vital’ for Arsenal to attain Champions League football next season.

The Gunners managed to see off Sunderland last weekend and finally move into the top half of the Premier League table after enduring a horrendous start to the new campaign. However, after picking up only their third win this season – thanks to RVP’s brilliance – Arsenal now trail fourth-placed Newcastle by just 6 points and Mertesacker for one is determined to make up the ground and finish in the top four come the end of May:

‘It’s vital that we reach at least the top four in the league, but at the moment we don’t have the points to speak about that.’

‘It’s important to perform well to make sure we move up the table. The supporters have to feel we are giving everything to succeed.’

He finished off by saying:

‘I am here to play football, to play Champions League and I want to be successful in all the challenges we face this season’

Forget champions league, just get that stupid thought out of your head right now. This team will be a ‘success'(funny how our definition of success continues to fall) if it can finish in the top half of the table.

agree with pete…what the past few years have taught me is that there is am unrealistic expectation at our club, maybe due to the past glory years.
Take out RVP, JW and TV5 and we would really sruggle to even get mid-table. Wenger is deluded, some of the players are over-optimistic and some of the fans still have the “wenger belief”.
We can if circumstances fall favourably make a cup final, but thats it….6th place at the very best..probably 8th
