Time for this Arsenal full-back to show what he’s truly made of?

Bacary Sagna faces a three month spell on the sidelines after breaking his leg in the north London derby this past Sunday.

After the game this statement was released:

‘We can confirm Bacary Sagna sustained a fracture to the fibula in his right leg. Further detailed investigations and assessments will take place on Monday.’

‘Bacary will see ankle specialists and the Arsenal medical team regarding the further management of his injury. It is expected that Bacary will be out for approximately three months and a surgical procedure cannot be ruled out at this stage.

‘Everyone at the club wishes Bacary a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him playing again as soon as possible.’

Arsene Wenger added:

‘He was pushed quite hard by Ekotto but I think they were both going for the ball.’

The 28-year-old Frenchman has since had surgery to stabilise the injury. The surgery went according to plan and the full-back is expected to be back in the New Year.

So, with his injury keeping him out of action for at least 3 months, the time has come for young full-back Carl Jenkinson to step in and show Wenger and the fans what he is capable of.

After being sent off during his baptism of fire against Manchester United earlier on in the season, the 19-year-old featured as a substitute for the injured Sagna this past Sunday against Spurs and clearly had a hard time trying to adapt to the game, as Bale tormented him with his pace and tricks. You could tell that the youngster struggled to cope.

In my opinion, Jenkinson will have a hard time trying to cope with the physicality that comes with the Premier League. He isn’t the quickest right-back which is a big worry, as most of the teams in the league boast very quick wingers, which means either the defence should tighten up to adjust to the drop in quality of the back four or Jenkinson has to pull up his socks and adapt very quickly.

With the international break already underway, now would be a good time for the young lad to work even harder to improve his game before the league re-starts, as we will need him to be at his very best for the next 3 months or so…unless Wenger has other plans in mind of course.

Whenever someone plays badly, they always seem to get labelled as slow. I don’t think that’s true of jenkinson at all. I think he’s reasonably quick and strong. The question marks are not with his phsyical attributes but rather with his positioning and mentality – things you expect to be problems for younger players. No one really complained about this kid in the games against udinese or liverpool – he was praised for his performances in those games in fact – it was only the united game in which he was exposed. This was a game where the entire side fell apart, let alone the defence, and it’s not really young players like him and traore who should be blamed for it. Unsurprisingly, the Utd game seems to have hurt his confidence, but unless wenger is willing to put coquelin in at RB while sagna is out, jenks will have to pick himself up quickly and get on with it. It’s going to be tough for him, and he should be supported by the fans. I think he can come through it, but it will be very difficult if people get on his back in the next few weeks. If he does overcome his confidence issues, it will only make him stronger for the future.

You haven’t even got the intelligence to get his name right, it’s JENKINSON not Jenkins. If you do not think much of him fine, but do not disrespect the youngster by calling him crap. I can think of a few choice words to call you if you want.

ha…you alright there sunshine lol sound like your time the month has come round….i dont think much of him because he is crap he plays like my dog running after its fav. ball….. wenger needs to do a better job of bringing in new talent and stop going on the cheap and inexperianced or old and talent just might still be there knowledge… there has been plenty of opportunity to sign promising players and with experiance…. i personally think wenger has signed players who only robotically function to his word and play with little fight and there ambition is to play in the premiership and not own it like our past invinsible days….the players we have now are all dumbstruck if you ask me lacking direction on and off the pitch with confidence slowly shifting away from wenger and there own ability to win as a team there is now gunner pride in them. Iam a great admire of wenger but geesh he looks desperate now, like someone has stole his genius book on how to run a footbal club…. not even planning if we should loose fab and nasri and gael?? how can you let this past with all our competitors bettering there stock of players, lets be honest all our good players have left yes they were not as accomplished in position before wenger but times change and advance we are still trying to put together after henry.

I think you are wrong, Jenkinson is not slow. Not the quickest I grant you but certainly faster than a lot of fullbacks I have seen in the premier division. If you are basing this observation on Sunday’s game then give the lad a break. There are not many full backs who can match Baile in full flow for speed. I think he has done remarkably well considering his age and inexperience. He is sure to improve with more games under his belt.

years ago players like jenkinson, chamach, frimpong even walcott would still have beeb in the reservres being eased in gently.sadly due to the board or as we are led to believe arsene has pushed towards using youngsters whom are very good players but not yet ready. i include ramsey in this too. too much pressure is on them and threy dont have the support of mature winners on the field or a stroong captain to guide them. arsenal have unfortunately been sussed by other teams due to poor managent of players at this level or retention of quality players thro lack of contract agreements. bring back dein please and we will move forward.
