Arsenal’s poor start to this season has been well documented.

As we all know, and after just 5 games, we have only managed to pick up 4 points out of 15 and are currently sitting in 17th position in the Premier League.

Well, not to rub salt in the wounds of the players and everyone involved with the club, but former Arsenal Left-Back Kenny Sansom believes that the Gunners are going to struggle to retain a top four finish this season:

Sansom told talkSPORT:

‘It’s going to be very, very difficult for Arsenal. They’ve got injuries to their two most important players, Thomas Vermaelen and Jack Wilshere.’

‘Currently I’m not even sure if that is going to resolve the issues, yeah it will give the team a boost however if players are not prepared to work for the positions by the time Vermaelen and Wilshere return our season will be un-salvageable.’

Undoubtedly players need to do the ground work because if we keep leaking goals then no amount of players returning from injury are going to make things better. Certain players in key positions are not playing well at the moment and we’ve let in some stupid goals because of this. Our performances have simply not been up to scratch.

Arsenal need to resolve the defensive issues and that was something that with the signings of Mertesacker and Santos I was hoping would’ve happened. However, due to the injury to Vermaelen, we’ve been left with inadequate cover once again.

Kenny Sansom is right, things are going to be extremely hard for us this season, and unless our team fires themselves up and players improve their game rapidly, I honestly can’t see us finishing in the top four this season.
