Wenger insists Gunners can still win title – optimistic or in complete denial?

Ok guys, I am just going come out and say it, Gunnersphere.com has a fantastic editor called Tony Merakli, who has given me every one of my articles to write up since joining the site.

Sometimes I get the really juicy ones, which I am extremely passionate about and get to put my own thoughts on the matter. I get the obvious rumours, where I give my thoughts and once in a while I get articles like this:

After 5 Premier League games, in which we have only won 1 and conceded 14 goals in the process, the last thing I expected was for Arsene Wenger to come out and say that it is too early to concede the title and in doing so suggests that we could still win it.

‘It is too early to speak about that. Let’s come back to a better distance with the top teams before we speak about that and then we will see. If the team gets momentum, we can be very strong.’

Now, like 90% of the people who are reading this article, my immediate thoughts are that the Le Boss has finally lost his marbles. I would love to share his optimism and part of me really does trust the things that he Wenger says, but really? If he says that we can win the league then there is a part of me that wants to shout out ‘COME ON THE ARSENAL’ and cheer us on to the Premier League title, but it is a tough ask, especially with the start we’ve had.

On one side of the coin you have Arsenal – 5 games played, 1 win, 1 draw, 3 defeats and a goal difference of -8.

On the other side you have Manchester United – 5 games played, 5 wins and a goal difference of +17

Yesterday, Wenger said:

‘It is absolutely not realistic not to be worried when you have a team like Manchester United in front of you. The only thing we can do is focus on our performances, win our games and hope they will drop some points at some stage.’

Its already being suggested, albeit a bit prematurely, especially after 5 games, that Manchester United could have a perfect season ahead. However, Wenger was quick to point out who had done it before:

‘If they do a perfect season, they do a perfect season. Until now, only one team did that – Arsenal.’

Wenger is obviously trying to keep face with the fans, let’s not mix our words here, the Frenchman is being very optimistic, but he has to be. If he came out and said to the media after 5 games that ‘we have no chance’, then we would all be up in arms calling for him to be sacked. However, he has said what any manager worth his weight in gold would say in his position and that’s ‘let’s keep on fighting’ and I think that is Wenger down to the core. Yes, He has his faults, but there is nobody else I would rather have in charge of the club.

This is where that part of me comes across that has given me so much problems writing what could seem like to many of you a really really easy article. However, if I had simply come on here and said ‘pffft the old guys gone mad’, that wouldn’t give the story.

Could we still win the Premier League? Mathematically, we could.

I tell you, if we come back from our 5 game start to win this Premier League title, then it would eclipse our ‘Invincible’ season – a bold statement, but a valid on in my view.

not a chance…..wenger is a hopeless optimist bordering on a fantasist.
Top 4 is like thinking you’ll win the jackpot lottery..Be lucky to finish 8th…spuds will show us up this season…thats how bad it will be.

history dictates its possible though sounds far fetched, the reality is we could go on a 20 game unbeaten run, other teams could start picking up injuries suspensions etc CL/Euro could start having an effect we will be having our players back from injuries new players bedding in. long shot but Ill rather be an optimistic fool than a pessimist who will end up could have should have would have. You don’t try you don’t get.

I love ur faith but let me remind of some fact u seem to 4get. Out of our 5new arrival 2are renowned 4their injuries problem. The near prefect replacement 4cesc is out 4the year. Our back 4 which is supposed to help us achieve ur 33games unbeaten lacks depth and strength. We lack a title chasing 2nd team. Now let me ask U, honestly does Man Utd, Chelsea, Man city or even Spurs look like a team that wouldn’t make the top4 on the EPL?
