‘They can get into the top four but they won’t be challenging for trophies’

Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson believes the Gunners have the squad and ability to maintain a top four finish this season, but reckons Wenger’s men won’t be challenging for any silverware.

Arsenal have begun their Premier League campaign poorly this season, picking up 1 point in their first 3 games, and as a result, sit 17th in the table and currently hold the worst goal difference in the league following their humiliating 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford last week.

This, among other reasons, prompted Arsene Wenger to dive into the summer transfer market and snap up some much needed reinforcements, signing Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun (on loan), Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos all on deadline day.

However, despite the Frenchman’s summer acquisitions, Robson believes Wenger hasn’t done enough repair work to get his side amongst those challenging for silverware this season.

He told talkSPORT:

‘When I look at Arsenal’s side, yes Arsene Wenger has gone and got the players that many people [thought they needed].’

‘I think they can get into the top four but they won’t be challenging for trophies. I don’t think Arsenal have improved but they have certainly improved from what they had [available for the 8-2 defeat] against Man United.’

What do you guys make of Robson’s comments – will Arsenal be challenging for trophies this season, can they accomplish a top four finish?

It sucks that as an arsenal fan, i have to realistically wait three years for any descent silverware, i’ve just waited 6, and that was when we’re trying to build the team around him, now we have to start from scratch.
We have fallen from grace and into the likes of totenham and liverpool.

Arsenal is there for trophies this season. Wait and see.

Well normally people are saying we won’t make it into the top 4 and we always do. Now they’re saying we will make top 4 but won’t win a trophy, which by previous standards means we will win one. That’s pretty awesome if you ask me, we’ve taken a step up.

All joking aside, he’s jumping the gun a bit don’t you think? We haven’t even seen our new signings play for us, we haven’t yet fielded our strongest 11 in a match yet so we have no idea what this season will be like yet nor how we compare to the other teams. There are 35 games left in EPL, look at how bad a run Chelsea had last season and they ended up second. A slow start may well mean we build up pace as the season progresses instead of burning out at the final furlong. We know we have the squad to compete and we will compete.

    @bongo,
You are absolutely correct. How on earth Robson can predict, this early, how the squad with such new blood will prosper is beyond belief.
Our main strength is that we now have an experienced spine in the team where ALL the players want to play for Arsenal.
I sometimes wonder why these retired players enjoy nit-picking about their former Clubs. Is it
sour grapes or a form of bitterness over lost youth? Either way we can do without the Robson’s,Wright’s and McLintock’s of this world.

Is Robson aware that we have just one point less than what we had after 2 games last season? In February we were challenging on 4 fronts with the the quadruple within our grasp.

Robson and Dixon are speaking as pundits and have to remain neutral thing when giving an unbiased account of Arsenal. These ex-players sometimes seem to go over the top to prove they’re not being biased, and that’s when we hear ridiculous comments like the ones reported here.

  • Arsenal1Again says:

I meant after 3 games last season, not 2.
