Should Wenger consider playing this forward in a free role?

Robin van Persie is usually deployed as a main striker at Arsenal, but the 28-year-old believes he will do well in a free role playing just behind the striker, following his four goal rout for the Netherlands on Friday.

The Dutchman played just behind Klaas Jan Huntelaar in the Netherlands 11-0 demolition of San Marino, and after the match Van Persie admitted that he enjoyed the new role.

He told OnsOranje:

‘This game I had a free role. That was fun. But at Arsenal I play as a striker, that’s what I do every day.’

Nobody doubts the technical ability that Van Persie possesses. He can thread a perfect through ball, take the perfect free kick, and dribble around some of the best defenders in the world.

I believe Arsene Wenger should consider playing our number 10 just behind our main striker, maybe Ju Young Park this season.

With RVP playing in his ‘new role’, we have another player pulling the strings to create goals, instead of leaving that job solely to our midfielders.

I believe Van Persie will step up in a big way this season, especially with the loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri this summer. He is the club captain, and by playing him in that free role, he will be able to have a much larger influence on the pitch, apart from just putting the ball in the back of the net.

So, should Wenger consider deploying RVP in a free role this season?

i think that’d be great cos rVp has not only got an eye for incl but also for passes.

And you mention “pulling the strings”, Vp could be our next best replacement for cesc. Hes very creative, technically gifted, the captain, and has experience. Having as a creative forward floating between midfield and attack could be very interesting

I think RVP should play in free role behind Park and positive results will be on the pitch

Mabye we should let RVP play where he is comfortable in. But i really dont care as long as there is results!!!

Yea, yea yea. Free role behind which ever striker, and they should be interchangable too the strikers to avoid burn out too soon and injuries.

Wenger has to go back to the Bergkamp role, Van Persie wanted the number 10 shirt, now give him the position.

It’s useless having someone like arteta/ramsey/wilshere who to have work defensively in midfield then have no energy or simple not in position to launch an effective attack behind the striker

I agree with you,but ply behind him Arteta & Song, while the wings should Gervinho & Walcott and the defense should be Sagna, Per, Verminator, Santos.

I thought this for the last two years with a goal poacher coming in, 1 upfront is too negitive & rvp has the skill to beat a man & play the ball though with him on his own he got 3 defenders on him & walcot coming from a defending position wenger needs change formation from time to time when we are strugging to break down a defending blackburn boltin etc i hope this park/ox/ryo can be speedy front man to help rvp.
