Should Arsenal go back for this midfield enforcer in January?

Several reports claim that Arsene Wenger will go back for Yann Mi’Vila in the January transfer window.

Arsenal had a reported £22 million offer knocked back by Rennes last week, yet the 21-year-old France international remains a top target for Wenger, and will apparently try one more time to land the highly-rated defensive midfielder when the winter window opens.

So, should Wenger attempt to sign M’Vila this January?

In my opinion, I think it depends on our current position, performances and if we pick up any more injuries before the transfer window re-opens – it’s just too early to tell.

M’Vila would make an excellent acquisition. The Frenchman possesses great defensive qualities as well as impressive physical strength and positioning. He is simply the midfield enforcer that we currently lack.

Alex Song has done a good job for us in this role, but he seems to push a lot further up the field these days, which worries me a little. Plus, if Cameroon qualifies for the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in late January and lasts for 3 weeks, then we will be short in midfield and options for this role. Emmanuel Frimpong could slot in, but I think his inexperience could cost us, hence why Wenger wanted to bring in the Rennes midfielder this summer.

As stated earlier, it all depends on our circumstances leading up to January – I think Wenger’s decision to go back for M’Vila is a little premature at this stage.

Only time will tell if Arsene’s interest in the Frenchman will increase or fade.

I really agree with you, with kind of position Arsenal is right now. we need someone like Yann Mi’Vila to cover up for us.

Agree but cameroon chance of qualifyin is very slim because senegal already won the group and with 8points for cameroon and one match remaining the chance of being one of 2best runner up is slim as it is currently between sudan, libya and nigeria who already hold more points than cameroon…check bbc sport africa section for details.
But m villa will be a good signing regardless of songs situation

I would like to see this guy playing alongside song or frimpong. He looks to me a much more disciplined player, and very strong, although not a hot-headed enforcer-type – more like a stronger version of gilberto. I think he would help to improve the consistency of our performances.

yes yes yes… end of, he oozes class, is a good passer, mobile and loves a tackle, as well as reading the game… every inch the 25 million player and already better than song in my view

    Tony Merakli,

“Emmanuel Frimpong could slot in, but I think his inexperience could cost us, hence why Wenger wanted to bring in the Rennes midfielder this summer.”

Pro tip: don’t say “hence why.” It’s redundant. Hence essentially means, “as a consequence” or “which is why.”

In regards to your article though, obviously we need to see how everyone plays, but I think M’Vila is an excellent player from what I’ve seen of him and I like the idea of a future central three consisting of Song, M’Vila, and Wilshere. You say that you worry seeing Song going forward so much, but this could give him the chance to go forward more often while still retaining parts of that defensive midfielder mentality, that “steel” everyone says we’ve been lacking. A central three of those young players would be tough as nails. Of course, we wouldn’t need that kind of midfield for every game, which would see a much more creative trio of M’Vila (or Song) with Ramsey and Wilshere.

The only problem I see with bringing in a player like that is the potential stifling of Frimpong’s obvious talent. That kid bleeds Arsenal, but still displays the rawness of an inexperienced teenager; much how a young puppy pitbull might try to bite your face off cause he doesn’t know better. I love Frimpong and want him to destroy out there, so I worry about having three young defensive mids of Song, M’Vila, and Frimpong. We’d certainly have the league’s most talented depth in that position though!

all of a sudden you forgot who arsene wenger is.
yes he’s good player but 22 millions if a bit too much. xabi alonso is losing his place at real madrid if he’s not cup tied he would be another option. real madrid will certainly offload some midfielders in january to get them off their payrolls.
still rennes need to reduce that record fee for yann m’vila.

M’Vila would be an excellent addition and would provide the midfield defensive lynchpin that we really need. Our two Africans are too emotional and far too easily lose control and get themselves and the team in trouble by taking thoughtless penalties in key situations.

    Go for it Arsene…

  • Psalmjoe says:
