Per Mertesacker has warned his Arsenal team-mates to expect a difficult encounter in his homeland this week.

The Gunners will start their Champions League campaign off this Tuesday with a visit to Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund, and Mertesacker, who arrived from Werder Bremen on transfer deadline day 11 days ago, reckons Arsenal will have to play well in order to grind out a result in Germany.

The 26-year-old was quoted in The People today saying:

‘Dortmund were the best team in Germany last year, they do a good job passing the ball and have great players. It will be difficult for us but I know we have very good players and I’m confident we can get a result.’

‘Dortmund are the toughest opponent in our group, so we will be very happy if we can take something from this match.’

The German added:

‘I have a lot of experience but it is a new level for me to play in England although my targets and goals are high.’

‘One thing is for sure, I will give everything every time I put on the Arsenal shirt.’

Undoubtedly this will be our toughest game in our group.

Like Mertesacker said, Dortmund were, and probably still are, the best team in Germany. They have an abundance of talent amongst their squad as well as a style of play similar to Arsenal.

I, like Per, will be very happy to see us pick up something from this match, which will undoubtedly be a great one to watch.

i for one will take another gritty 1-0 result, as i believe the more wins we get the better the players will feel and as that happens arsenal will get back to their fighting best. Still i believe we need a quality CM who can command the mid field.
