Are Wenger’s European expectations this season realistic?

Arsenal have had a rough ride as of late, with players injured and suspended, many Gooners are now looking forward to some Champions League action. However, Arsene Wenger, prior to Arsenal’s game against Borussia Dortmund last night, commented that the club’s job this season in Europe is to get through the group stages:

‘Two teams are above the rest this season, Real Madrid and Barcelona, The rest have to catch up during the season. The competition inside our country has become harder. And outside, Barcelona and Real Madrid have much more financial power.’

‘For us, it’s a new start because we are a new squad. And what is at stake during the group stages for us is to show that we can go through.’

Many Arsenal fans will feel that this is a step back and, in all honesty, those thinking this are right. Right now there is no chance of us winning the Champions League, especially playing the way we are and with all injuries we currently have.

Wenger is in a really tough spot because if he came out and said that our goal was to win the Champions League then he would be getting flack from all the Arsenal fans when it doesn’t happen. I think we need to concentrate on winning SOMETHING this season and build from there because even as much as I would love for it to happen, currently, I feel that we do not have the confidence and quality to match Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Arsene Wenger is being very realistic in my view and this may not please some fans who think we should be challenging for the honour, but my point is that if we can at least get through the group stages then we can build up our confidence and self belief in our current squad. What Arsenal need to do is turn that confidence into results and, most importantly, silverware.

Personally, I do not care if the only silverware we win this season is the Carling Cup, something is better than nothing. Hopefully Arsenal will turn it around and be challenging for the Premier League, but let’s just take it a week at a time. We cannot be talking about winning the Champions League when we have only won 1 game so far this season.

How far can Arsenal go this season in the Champions League? Is progressing through the group stage enough, or can they go further?
