Why Wenger is right to stick up for his contract rebel

Arsene Wenger has openly come to the defence of City-bound Samir Nasri, following criticism from Arsenal fans.

Many Gooners are questioning Nasri’s commitment to Arsenal and feel that the Frenchman needs to move away from the Emirates because he is not committed to the club anymore.

If you believe what is said in the media and what comes out of Roberto Mancini’s mouth, then the 24-year-old is expected to sign for City by Wednesday next week.

However, Arsene Wenger has told fans not to question Nasri’s commitment and believe they should get behind him:

‘One thing I don’t question is the commitment of Samir Nasri to this Club. Every day since he has arrived here, and every day in pre-season, he has worked with a fantastic spirit in training.’

As fans, we are unaware of what is happening behind the scenes. However, I don’t agree with people jeering Nasri because (in my opinion) it has a negative effect on the club as well as the player.

Wenger is doing the right thing by sticking up for Nasri and, to protect the team, he wants the fans to be behind the club – not singling out a player who may or may not stay. As an example, if the deal with Man City DOES fall through and Samir Nasri remains an Arsenal player, then Wenger has until the end of the season to convince him to sign a new contract – this isn’t going to happen if the player continues to be booed and abused by some fans on a weekly basis.

Wenger has a duty to protect his players regardless of who they are and what they have said or done. We have heard it on many occasions when he has ‘not seen it’, when he clearly, but he will not openly criticise a player in his squad. It is not the way he works as a manager and you have to give the man credit for that.

I have been an Arsenal fan for 31 years now and I still have faith in Wenger to make things good, and I know people are panicking because we haven’t signed a lot of players, hell it worries me too, but I honestly believe that Wenger knows what he is doing and will sign the players he thinks we need.

We all have ideas about who we want at the club and I think we will be signing at least two more players between now and the closure of the summer transfer window.

For now, let’s all let ‘le boss’ get on with his job and get behind the side.

I understand that AW has to motivate a player to play his best for us, but to justify the player in such glowing terms seems a paradox to me. We have consistently sold our best players since the invinsibles. At least it shows consistence but at what cost?

Does this mean that if more of our better players come to him with the same story he would have no option other than to sell? To do otherwise would now be seen as unfair and duplicitious.

We need to re-focus the team to the task at hand by making a bold statement of intent in the market. Sign the players we need without making it feel like watching paint dry. We need a commanding presence at th CB position and the midfield. Our young players are great but they need time to find their feet and putting too much pressure on them too early does not help. We need a balance between quality experienced players and youth. Put a foot down on the necks of our rubber-necking stars by telling them that they have to commit fully or they are out. And for God’s sake mean it.
