Should Wenger table a ‘serious offer’ for this German centre-back?

Arsenal have been put on red alert by Werder Bremen, after the German club recently revealed that they would consider ‘serious offers’ for Per Mertesacker.

The Gunners have been linked with a number of centre-backs already this summer – Gary Cahill, Chris Samba and Phil Jagielka have all been linked with a move to the Emirates – but nothing has yet materialised.

However, it has been reported today that Mertesacker, who has been on Wenger’s radar over the past few seasons, could be made available if the price is right.

The 6’6’’ German international has entered the final year of his current contract at Bremen and could be allowed to leave the Bundersliga outfit for as little as £6 million, a fee that would undoubtedly have Arsene Wenger smiling at.

Bremen manager Klaus Allofs was quoted on SkySports.com saying:

‘We are willing to discuss a transfer for Per.’

‘We have promised him we will listen to serious offers.’

The 26-year-old centre-back, who made 37 appearances for Bremen last season, would make a great addition to the Arsenal line-up.

His height would be very beneficial to both our defensive and offensive set-pieces, his positional awareness is good and his experience would go down a treat as well.

On the flipside, he’s not the most agile of defenders, which is a flaw that would be exposed by the quicker strikers in the Premier League. However, if we can acquire him for as little as £6 million, then I believe we should go for him. It wouldn’t be seen as a gamble and would provide us that ‘tall’ player that Wenger was on about earlier on in the summer.

Anyway, Mertesacker is up for grabs, let’s see if Wenger makes a move for him in the next 24 days.

he will be a great partner for vermalean/samba/cahill.but i think wenger will wait for a season if he’s gonna be a free agent.

Mertesacker appears to be available at the right age, experience and price. Yet there are doubts regarding his ability to play the defensive high line demanded by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.
This is a typical case requiring complete trust in the Manager. He will know whether the guy will fit in, NOT the baying masses begging him to sign any and every player on offer.

      he is available.

  • Arsenal says:

As much as this sounds like the perfect move (tall, experienced international who has played against top competition in the Bundesliga and World Cup, AND HE IS CHEAP!) It is all just too perfect to be true and we will probably buy some kid from the academy of a second division Finnish side or something.

No … he is available. And unless he is boxing clever there is some reason why Wenger has not moved in ?

  • Jago says:

Yes he is class. I said on a couple of blogs him and vermalean are a perfect foil and then get samba in for Stoke wolves and all the other teams that beat us up. Arsenal need steel and he will give it. 6 million would be the deal of the season

  • Apart from Jagielka, the rest of the defenders Arsenal has been linked with have a genuine lack of pace, but, in terms of talent and experience, Mertesacker is way ahead of the defenders Wenger is reportedly interested in, having played at World Cup, Euro, Champions League and the Bundesliga for a long time. Despite his apparent lack of pace, the Giant German has grown up in tactical environment, which has made him develop a high degree of game reading and awareness that would make him capable of adapting to life in the Premier League seamlessly, and at 6-7m, he represents one of the biggest bargains of the close season. Without a blink of an eye, Wenger should sign him, he would be a great addition to an Arsenal squad that is short of inspiration and leadership.

This guy is peter crouch in deffence, hes lanky slow and clumsy….

I no everyone is so desprate for a signing that you’ll welcome anyone right now but trust we this guy aint for us, with the stupidly high line we play this dude will get raped, we need someone with premier league experiece, with great awareness, I dont think we need the huge guy, the overly agressive guy we just need someone who’s organised, knows what hes doing, someone who can lead, another tom vermarlen would be great

  • Wenger, buy this guy mertesacker to replace squillaci and djourou.Wenger should not waste any time on this one andhe should make this deal happen.SIR KBO2 M.SHINKAFA,BAUCHI-NIGERIA.

  • sean the chelsea fan says:

Brad. Don’t be so naive. Per is Germany’s first choice centre half. Germany happen to be ranked higher than England. So Per is what the Gooners need, he’s got the experience as well as the physical attributes. Otherwise, go sign Chelsea’s Alex, he won’t score thunder strikes against you anymore.
