With Cesc Fabregas finally departing Arsenal for Barcelona and Samir Nasri on his way to Manchester City within the next few days, the Gunners are in real need of an established midfielder.

Well, recent rumours have surfaced that Arsenal are in fact interested in Marseille’s midfield maestro Mathieu Valbuena.

The 26-year-old Frenchman, who bagged 5 goals and 5 assists in 40 appearances for Marseille last season and already 3 assists in 2 games this year, is apparently being lined up to replace Man City-bound Nasri.

Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo recently stated that the French club are prepared to speak to interested clubs, but insists Arsenal have not been in contact over a move for the player yet.

Anigo told RMC:

‘Mathieu has been with this club for six years and we’re willing to open talks if Arsenal want to buy him. We are very pleased with his performances, but we’re ready to listen to offers out of respect for the player. However, we have not had contact with Arsenal. Not about Mathieu and not about Andre Ayew either.’

Anigo went on to confirm that Ayew, who has also been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium, will not be leaving Marseille this summer.

‘Andre Ayew is not for sale. It is correct that he has a clause in his contract, but that clause was valid until a certain date and that day has already passed. If clubs want to buy him now, they’d have to pay another fee than that clause. Andre still has plenty to achieve at Marseille.’

Valbuena and Ayew’s contracts both expire in the summer of 2014, so Marseille are clearly in no rush to sell their star midfielders. Then again, we have yet to make contact with them.

With Fabregas leaving for £35million, Wenger now has, if I’m not mistaken, £70million+ to spend on new players.

With less than 2 weeks to go in the transfer window, Wenger must surely spend or see our trophy drought extend to 7 seasons!!!

Arsenal is linked with every single player in Europe but have signed only three (only one useful for now). Wenger and the current board members are ready to be a middle table club.
    They lack direction and vision.
