Arsene Wenger has today confirmed that he will sign a defender to shore up the Gunners back-line before the transfer window shuts, but will not reveal his primary target.
Arsenal have been linked with Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Blackburn’s Chris Samba already this summer and, just recently, Everton’s Phil Jagielka has emerged as a potential target for the Frenchman. However, nothing has yet transpired.
Wenger was quoted in The Sun saying:
‘Certainly, we will have to find one more defender. We [are] working on it.’
‘I don’t want to comment individually because I do not want to destabilise clubs. I do not want to do to other clubs what some clubs do to us so I wouldn’t like to comment individually on any player.’
‘I can promise we work very hard on it. In fairness, everybody looks for players. Everybody looks for the same area and you see that nobody turns up with magic. It’s all about being steady, working very hard on it and being calm as well.’
I’m glad to see Wenger has realised that the club do need to add another defender to the squad before the new season gets underway.
Personally, I would be satisfied with the acquisition of either Samba or Cahill, not so much with Jagielka though, especially if he will cost us a ridiculous £20 million.
I just hope Wenger doesn’t acquire us another Silvestre or Squillaci and actually adds a bit of quality to our back-line this summer.

I thought that if wenger buy samba,it would a great chance for arsenal even for a players that was play near him.
Get us a commanding CB with good height and mobility, NOT another deadwood. Getting a Squillaci again would be unforgivable. In fact anyone would think he was AW’s love child.

why is it so difficult to buy a defender???? fergie bought phil jones a month ago….perhaps he just slapped 20million down in front of blackburn and it was done and dusted. Jones is already training and playing with man utd..whilst cut-price fanatic wenger is leaving it very late in the hope of a bargain. Is it worth a few million saved to have this uncertainty and lack of practice with a new team?..I think its risky and unnecessary!Poor management!….No reckless management!!!!!!!!!!!!
