The capture of Gervinho and other thoughts of the week at Arsenal

FINALLY a signing from Arsenal worth talking about.

Will the Gervinho signing determine whether Samir Nasri commits his future to Arsenal? Where will he fit into the squad? Will Wenger need to change his tactical formation?

This young striker looks talented and has a lot of promise about him, but will he be able to deal with the pressure and media scrutiny that comes with being an Arsenal player?

This obviously remains to be seen.

In other news, Nicklas Bendtner and Manuel Almunia are finally set to leave the club – maybe it’s for the best.

Bendtner, who we all know lacks no confidence in his own scoring ability, has bagged us some great goals and has made some significant contributions to the club over the past. However, it appears that his contributions were not enough for Arsene Wenger to pick him ahead of Robin van Persie. RVP is a proven world-class striker and, in my opinion, will never lose his spot in the team.

Almunia on the other hand looks like he has just lot all motivation in playing the sport. Just looking at his body language says everything to me. It seems as if he was already done with the team by the beginning of last season. The final nail in the coffin seemed to be when Jens Lehmann returned to the club after the turn of the New Year. The return of Lehmann sent a clear message to Almunia in my book. Wenger would rather bring in a retired goalkeeper than put faith in the Spanish shot-stopper. I do think Almunia was treated poorly by the majority of the fans and has definitely lost all confidence since ditching his bleached blonde hair. All I can say is he never seemed to get his form back and has been very flakey over the past few seasons at Arsenal. It is in his best interest that he departs Arsenal as soon as possible and restarts his career elsewhere – a change of scenery is definitely needed for him.

On another note, I do believe that Wojciech Szczesny should retain his status as Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper. However, I would like to see Vito Mannone as second-choice ahead of Lukasz Fabianski. In my opinion, Vito has been overlooked and underrated ever since his short stint as the number one two years ago, replacing the then injured Almunia. He remained undefeated and conceded only two goals during his short spell in goal.

Back to strikers, hopefully we will get to see Carlos Vela back in action for the first-team this season coming. The young Mexican looked very promising in a handful of appearances in the Carling Cup in the past for the Gunners, but has failed to make a mark in the Premier League. He did look good for West Brom last season whilst on loan and I for one hope that Vela’s spell at the baggies will have the same effect as it did on Wilshere, when the young midfielder was loaned out to Bolton during the 2009/10 season.

Arsenal’s transfer wheels are finally in motion following the recent capture of Gervinho from Lille, and with the impending sales of Bendtner and Almunia expected in the upcoming weeks, there will surely be some excess cash to spend on new recruits.

Only time will tell!

Vela was barely used at WBA, so I doubt it’ll change. In my opinion, he doesn’t have the physical or mental strength required.

Couldnt agree more with you about the keepers and the strikers. I think the 3 keepers we have are as good as any 3 in the EPL. We currently have 7 strikers competing for 3 positions, RVP, Nasri, Walcott, Gervinho, Arshavin, Chamakh and Vela. Hopefully, Emmanuel-Thomas will rediscover his form of last season and Miyaichi will get his work permit to give us 3 players fighting for each position and IMO all 9 very different.
We just need to make some decisions about the defence. I am quite happy with the 3 players fighting for the RB spot Eboue, Sagna and Jenkinson. I would also be more than happy with 3 players fighting for the LB spot, Vermaelen, Gibbs and Traore. However, that would then leave us short, very short for CB, I want to see 6 players there, if Vermaelen is to be a left back then 2 centre halves are required, Mertesacker and Vertonghen would be my choice. Similar at DM, i think another body is required to fight with Song and Frimpong. Parker would be my choice. I think Fabregas, Ramsey and Rosicky is enough for the AM role, however, if Cesc goes we should go for Schneider or Hazard. The CM role currently held by Wilshire and backed up by Diaby and Lansbury is also ok, if Diaby is fit enough.
