Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp was recently promoted from youth coach to assistant manager at Ajax, which has left me wondering – is the Dutchman edging his way closer to a return to Arsenal in a similar role?

Even though Dennis hasn’t officially signed an official contract which states he is the new no.2, the Arsenal legend has begun training sessions with the Ajax first-team.

A few days ago, an Ajax spokesperson stated:

‘Dennis Bergkamp is the new assistant. He has not signed a new contract, but has already started in his new job and took training on Tuesday for the first time.’

Bergkamp had been in charge of Ajax’s youth team for the past three years after 20 amazing years as a professional footballer.

In 2009, the Dutchman made it no secret of his desire to one day work at Arsenal as a coach, after 11 years at the North London club:

‘I wouldn’t rule out working for Arsenal. I really love this club and the country and I love working here. I would advise everyone to work in England, as a player or a coach, it just breathes football. It is fantastic for the game.’

He continued:

‘I want to work and train a team in England. Not as a head coach but instead as a member of staff, where I could work specifically with the strikers. Being a coach means you have to work 24 hours a day and that does not suit me. You have to watch matches at home, travel to see other teams, prepare training – it is something that I am not ready to do.’

So, is the news of Bergkamp becoming assistant manager at Ajax not only good news for the Dutchman himself, but for Arsenal and Wenger as well?

In my opinion, I think it is.

As he said back in 2009, he wasn’t ready to do it. However, it’s now 2011 and it appears that he is ready to step up to first-team coaching, which is great to hear.

I think in approximately 2 year’s time, Bergkamp will be back at Arsenal – just a gut feeling.

I believe Bergkamp will become an excellent coach in time, and when he eventually makes his return to Arsenal, it will be a glorious day, not only for the fans, but the players alike, purely for the fact that he is an Arsenal legend and a respected individual at the club.

I’m not knocking any of our current coaches, but I feel that if the backroom staff are Arsenal through and through (like Dennis Bergkamp), then it can only be a good thing for the club in general.

Nonetheless, this is certainly a step closer for Dennis Bergkamp becoming a future coach at the Emirates.
