Thomas Vermaelen has praised highly-rated youngsters Carl Jenkinson and Ryo Miyaichi, and believes both will shine at the Emirates this season.

The Belgian international, who missed a huge part of last season through a niggling Achilles injury, now looks fully fit and focused on the upcoming campaign with the Gunners.

Vermaelen recently admitted that he hadn’t a clue on who would be arriving or leaving the club this summer, but has already heaped praise on new boy Carl Jenkinson, recently signed from Charlton.

The resolute defender said:

‘Carl [Jenkinson] is really fit, especially today we did a maximum test and I think he came first, that shows that physically he’s ready for the Premier League.’

The 25-year-old Belgian also expressed his delight and confidence in Japanese youth star Miyaichi, who spent six months of last season out on loan with Dutch side Feyenoord.

The 18-year-old starlet has since returned to Arsenal and is currently with the squad in the Far East. During his time at Feyenoord, Miyaichi became a fan favourite and earned the nickname ‘Ryodinho’. Some sections of the Dutch media have even labelled him as ‘the next Cristiano Ronaldo’ and Vermaelen believes that the skilful youngster could be an effective asset for the Gunners in the upcoming season:

‘If you look at Ryo [Miyaichi], I’ve seen him a few times in the Dutch League because I follow it really well and he did well at Feyenoord, The people, the crowd loved him.’

‘Some friends of mine played with him and said he’s a good guy and technically he’s really good so I’m looking forward to know them better when we play more games and train more with the ball.’

‘He’s really a technical player, I don’t know his position exactly, I think he’s more of a winger.’

‘In Holland he played as a winger and technically he’s really good in one against one, really dangerous and he can score goals as well.’

Arsene Wenger welcomed Vermaelen’s claims and believes both Miyaichi and Jenkinson have the potential to become future stars at Arsenal.

The Frenchman said:

‘Jenkinson has shown power and good decision-making.’

‘Ryo Miyaichi has shown as well good qualities, he is always available, always keen to take people on, he works very hard. Both of them have shown interesting qualities. We are a big club with many good young players.’

I totally agree with both TV and Wenger’s claims.

I strongly believe that Miyaichi has a very bright future ahead of him, and his loan move last season would have no doubt boosted the youngster’s confidence and developed him further as a player. I hope to see him play a part in the new season.

As for Jenkinson, I can’t really judge his ability yet, as I haven’t seen him perform on a consistent basis. However, in the game against Malaysia XI, the right-back did impress me with his touch and movement, but as we all know – one good game doesn’t make you a good player, nor can you cast judgment.

However, If Jenkinson can continue his progress in the right way (which I’m sure he will under Wenger) and can perform on a consistent basis (hopefully in the upcoming season), then the Finnish Under-21 international could potentially become a future star at Arsenal.
