Arsene Wenger has recently revealed that he would be happy to let contract rebel Samir Nasri leave Arsenal for nothing next summer – just as long as he remains at the Emirates for the upcoming season.

The 24-year-old French star, who has attracted interest from both Manchester clubs, has only one year remaining on his current contract at Arsenal and has so far failed to agree a new deal.

However, Wenger is determined to keep hold of the French international this summer, especially with captain Cesc Fabregas inching his way closer to a move back to boyhood club Barcelona.

Wenger stated:

‘I’m willing to keep Samir for another year, even if I risk losing him for nothing when his deal expires next season.’

‘We are a big club with many good young players so we are confronted with many rumours. But it doesn’t affect much what’s happening inside the club. You could see when he [Nasri] played he wasn’t disturbed by that. He has always had a very good attitude.’

If Nasri doesn’t manage to sign a new deal at Arsenal, and the club are unwilling to sell the midfielder during the summer market, then the Frenchman will effectively leave for nothing next summer. In fact, the French ace would be able to agree a new deal to join a new club as early as January, which would undoubtedly please interested parties.

I strongly believe that Wenger is playing a very dangerous game here.

If Samir doesn’t sign a new deal by mid August, then Wenger should look to sell him, rather than losing him for nothing next summer. I think it would be very unwise to lose a £25 million rated player for zilch; it just wouldn’t make sense. Why should we lose out on the profit again?

Nasri, who travelled with the squad to the Far East and played a cameo role in yesterdays 4-0 win over Malaysia XI, is not the be all and end all at Arsenal (sorry guys but he isn’t), and in my opinion, shouldn’t be holding the club to ransom and playing these silly little games with Wenger and us fans.

He claims money isn’t the issue, winning trophies and being successful is. I can fully appreciate his stance on this; we haven’t won a bean in six-years and just like the fans, some players do feel frustrated and annoyed by this, apparently Nasri is one of them. But surely he must show some form of loyalty and believe that Arsenal can meet his ambitions?

To be honest, I’m not fussed what he decides to do this summer. However, should he decide not to seal a new deal at the Emirates by mid August the latest, then Wenger should definitely look to offload him and move on.

Is Wenger playing a dangerous game with this Nasri issue?

Keeping Samir is the right decision, not the popluar one, but the right one.

If every club sold every player that wanted to go when they said they wanted to go, they would be sending out the message that the club can be held for ransom via player power. This has been a problem since Bosman and many clubs have been left helpless because of it.

Arsene is standing firm and showing that he’s the boss and manager, not just some Arsenal employee.

I think that AW stubborn or stupid or both. If Nasri wants to leave Arsenal, let him do that. If he stayed without conviction, he will not be committed enough and this will have a negative effect on the morale of the team members. So AW should sell him asap, and use the money to buy a good player to replace him, as simple as that.

i think that its sad that he has revealed himself as a bit of mercenary. if players want to leave they should say so rather than mucking around the clubs and their supporters for the sake of a financial bonus.
personally i think we should sign him on better contract on a long term deal, keep him for the season and then flog him for a figure closer to his real value.

It’s an intelligent decision by Wenger. Nasri will play very well this coming season as a way of negotiating a big wage with the targeted new club. he will be making sure the club keeps interest in him. this would make arsenal champions and win the league and this can make him reconsider his decision to leave

The bit of this that rankles with me is that the club can afford to write off £25m, yet they could not afford to keep the season ticket prices as they were and imposed a 6.5% increase on us all. Are they just mugging us off? cos it bloody feels that way and somehow the club need to know that.

I want a meeting with Gazidis and Wenger about this, i think it is outrageous that they are allowed to make decisions like this without any consultations or repercussions.

So you’d rather 25 million than showing determination, ambition and resilience in the face of pressure from teams that think they’re bigger than us and can bully us into selling our best players? Yeah sounds like a great idea. We’ll prove to the world that we are a feeder club, that we will buckle if put under pressure by a player or another team and we’ll make all the doom mongers right about us, that’s worth 25 million isn’t it? Yeah that’s a the step backwards we need.

He will stay because he’s under contract and he will play his best for us this season or he will rot on the bench. One more year of a player of Nasris quality is worth 25 million, because he’s just a stop gap player while we build our team around the Ramsey/Wilshire partnership. We’re not keeping him because he’s brilliant, we’re keeping him because we can. We want success on the pitch, not profit. We want to keep our star performers and we want to show other teams that we’re not the shrinking violets they think we are. Oh no, we are Arsenal and we bow to no one.

We will win trophie next season and if Nasri decides to go after that then he will be our next Adebayor, good riddance in that case. But letting him go now, letting our best players leave just as they reach their peak makes us a laughing stock. We cannot be called a top team if we allow him to go. 25 million to keep our prestige, to continue to challenge is a tiny price to pay.

Obviously, you want the money…but if Wenger thinks he has a chance to win something this year, why on EARTH would he sell Samir Nasri w/ no guaranteed replacement? You don’t do it. I say keep him here…win a GD trophy…then get an extension. Boom. Roasted.

Wenger is clueless when it comes to financial matters (and defending)

  • Kuffman says:

Seriously Mr Gunnersphere are you a spud in disguise,we should strengthen Man City,is that so? Even if Man city pays £30m… What will we do with the money?

    • Tony Merakli says:

Nah I’m not a spud mate, all i’m suggesting is that if Nasri doesn’t want to sign a new deal and is taking the club on a ride, then we should look to cash in on him. I know fans are split on this, but this is my general opinion on the matter.

Why do we want a player on our books that doesn’t want to be there.

As stated in the article, couldn’t care less if he stays or go, but Wenger shouldn’t miss out on the cash. Granted, he may not spend it, but why should we lose out?

  • azhar says:

you idiot person, YOU MOAN WHEN WENGER DOES NOT SPEND AND SAY HIS GREEDY BUT THEN YOU MOAN WHEN HIS NOT BEING GREEDY BECAUSE IF NASRI DOES LEAVE IT WILL BE FOR FREE SO ITS EITHER ONE OR THE OTHER YOU TWAT BUT NASRI WILL STAY ANYWAY SO ITS HAPPY DAYS.

    • Tony Merakli says:

      What are you on about?

I’m just saying if Nasri is questioning the clubs ambitions then he should move on and we should cash in on him, rather than do another Flamini.
