Why Wenger shouldn’t be so reluctant to sell this man to Liverpool

Gael Clichy is ready to shrug off interest from Roma in an attempt to force a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool this summer, according to several sources.

The Serie A outfit are preparing to hijack Liverpool’s bid to sign the French left-back by trumping their opening bid of £5 million and offer £7 million for the players services. However, Clichy, Arsenal’s longest serving player, would prefer a switch to the Merseyside club and they appear determined to sign him this summer as well.

The Frenchman’s stance leaves the Gunners in a difficult position bearing in mind his current contract only has 12 months left to run.

It is understood that Arsene Wenger wants to sell the France international abroad, and is eyeing up Newcastle’s Jose Enrique as a potential replacement. However, the Gunners chief may ultimately have to sell Clichy to Liverpool, as the 25-year-old clearly indicated his desire to join the club if sold by Arsenal.

But should Wenger be worried about selling Clichy to Liverpool, or should he just let him leave for the right price?

To be honest with you, I can see why he would be reluctant to sell him to another Premier League club, especially a club like Liverpool, who in my opinion will be a much stronger side this season. However, if the deal is right, then why shouldn’t we sell him to the Reds?

The only thing that concerns me is – why are we selling our players for such little money? I know his contract is virtually up, but £5 million is nowhere near what we should sell him for.

Personally, I believe Wenger should let Clichy go, but for the right price.

The Frenchman obviously doesn’t want to continue his journey with Arsenal. However, I strongly believe that Wenger should acquire a replacement before selling him, just to be on the safe side.

I can see Wenger offloading Clichy, and then completely fail to sign anyone as a replacement, which could potentially leave us short in this position up until January – let’s just hope this doesn’t happen.

But in regards to the question at hand, I truly believe the Gunners should sell the player at the best price this summer.

Is there any potential danger of selling Clichy to Liverpool this summer?

Is £5 million the right price for the left-back?

If we have learned anything from selling Adebayor to mancity, and Anelka now playing for the blueybastards, we should know that the notion of selling our player (a starter) to one of our immideate rivals is countering our hopes to win trophies. I would not in a million years sell clichy to any of the top 6 teams in the league, not to barcelona, and not to madrid.

£5m is definitely not the right price nor is £7m. Wenger made a mistake in not signing Taiwo for free, now he is suffering the consequences. He should give Clichy a pay rise, and if that fails, he will have to get a replacement.

Hopefully PSG will offer around £10m.

I don’t like selling him for £2m less. But Liverpool will find they are getting a technically good footballer who is fast. But he is NOT a natural defender. And having been at Arsenal, coached by Wenger all this time – I imagine it is too late to learn.

It also shows there is no point in worrying about loyalty to the young players. Most of them will leave when it suits them and show no loyalty at all .. like Flamini did.

As far as Flamini he wanted to sign the year before he left but the boss unsure of his talents told him to prove his worth… He had that great year and well the rest is history. He received a better offer from Milan and we were left to wonder what could of been. Clichy i read somewhere that he was offered 80k a week. Not sure if that’s true but i hope it isn’t he isn’t worth that type of money. I ask though why wasn’t his contract sorted out last year? With the transfer market close to opening for business our closest rivals have been already splashing the cash some not as wisely as others though (20m for Henderson anyone? I thought not) I for one think that if the reports are true and Clichy is pushing for a move to Liverpool we really don’t have much choice. Atleast we can recoup some money while not what he’s worth even with a year left on his contract it’ll have to do. Baines would be adequate replacement but anyone we try to go for will be overpriced don’t forget were not the only ones that read the headlines. Just waiting for market to open lets see if Arsene & Ivan were telling is the truth…
