Can this midfielder be regarded as an Arsenal legend?

Cesc Fabregas’s days at the Emirates look numbered after Barcelona made their first official offer for the Arsenal skipper earlier in the week.

Though a reported £27 million bid was rejected, Barca are apparently ready to offer around £35 million for their former starlet in the upcoming weeks – this is not that far away from Arsenal’s £45 million valuation of their star player.

I would surely want as much as possible for Cesc Fabregas so that Arsenal as a club, don’t lose out. But for one, Wenger will find it hard to replace his captain in spite of his huge transfer budget. That’s because there are very few who have the quality that the 24-year-old has. Some might say that Samir Nasri is a more than capable replacement for the Spaniard, But, quite frankly, anyone with decent football knowledge will agree that Cesc is much better than his team-mate. The French maestro, who has only one year remaining on his current deal, is undoubtedly a fantastic player and has definitely developed over the last year. However, Fabregas is just phenomenal, and his consistency over the past five years are signs of a player destined for greatness (I hope it’s with Arsenal!).

When Fabregas joined Arsenal in 2003 as a 16-year-old, the Gunners were a successful team, and trophies were not scarce at Highbury. The Spaniard joined a team of players who were all regarded as club legends – Henry, Vieira, Bergkamp, Pires, the list goes on. Fabregas has always spoken of his admiration of these stalwarts and how he looked up to them in his early days in England. But as years went by, Arsenal’s move to the Emirates, and the huge debt incurred in the process, meant Arsenal had to depend on young talent to survive as a club. Evidently, the responsibility fell on the young shoulders of the midfielder, and I don’t think he failed to live up to it as some say.

Now the question arises whether Cesc Fabregas deserves to be classified a club legend if he leaves the club? He hasn’t won anything as a captain and has been a part of Arsenal’s six year trophy drought, which doesn’t bold well.

Excellent article. I hope we can keep him for another season. I want him to win something with us before he goes.

if u look at the stats on who has made the most assists in the 5 biggest leagues (England, spain, italy, germany, france) in the past 5 years Fabregas is has the most assists so i dont think no one can replace him

Hope Cesc stays but he can’t be a club legend at 24. Legends give the club their prime and Cesc is not at his prime as yet, they only think about the club and the shirt while they are there, not whine about going back home.

Thierry might have hankered for the Barca move but he gave us his best years and he felt that he was holding the new generation back. Cesc could become an Arsenal legend if he decided to stay and give his all because he’s not holding the squad back, he should be leading them into a new era but he doesn’t seem to care either one way or another.

agree with you mostly. he has to give his best years for the club but his last five years deserves credit. I think he has handled this transfer saga well. While Barca players are bleating about Cesc wanting to come back,Cesc has said he does not wish to hurt Arsenal. He will play here if he doesn’t go and will give his best. who would not want to play for Barca especially if they want you? Any footballer right now will wish to do that.

what ever happens after dis transfer saga, Capt fabregass would 4eva remain in my heart, he is still my captain and i hope he stays, with him and the right signings, Arsenal would dominate europe. I would so miss his passes dats y i call him “fabrepass” wit just 1 pass baaang, your defence is torn to shred.

Fab can not yet be classified as a legend @ Arsenal but i don’t think anybody can contest the fact that he has paid his dues if he leave at last.

  • dennis says:

My love for him will come to test if we meet barca in the champs league and he destroys our defence with that killer pass I don’t think I will love him anymore if he goes to barca there should be a clause in his contract that he should never play against Arsenal

As and when Fabregas leaves, I think he will always be remembered as someone who led by example, both on the field and off it. He wasn’t a dominant captain, but then they are born not made. I would like to think that the rest of his career would be spent at the Emirates but I fear that the constant “tapping up” by the Spanish will eventually bear fruit. At least one can say that in all this regrettable behaviour, Fabregas has behaved honourably, unlike the Barcelona Club officials and players.

Great article. Here’s the simple truth. Cesc will become a legend in the future and will be viewed that way by Arsenal fans too. But he was not a legend within this club, he’s not an Arsenal legend and if he leaves now he never will be, unless he was to see out his contract and he ushered in a new era of winning trophies as captain then he could be considered a legend.

His ability however will be legendary, and he has been involved in many different legendary moments and he will be remembered for that, we’ll have nothing but admiration and delight at his time at Arsenal and seeing him play. But history will remember him as a Barcelona great and that’s the clincher, to be an Arsenal legend you have to be considered an Arsenal legend by all football fans not just Arsenal fans. Everyone in the world equates Henry to Arsenal, he’s not considered a Barcelona legend, he made his legendary status before he left. Cesc hasn’t done that.

It’s not about trophies at all. Robin Van Persie hasn’t won too many with us but he’s definitely an Arsenal legend. He’s given us his best years and he is now in his prime and we still have another few years left with him. There’s never been any major transfer sagas and bar a few personal life blips and horrible injury record, he’s been loyal, faithful and determined to win in pretty much every match and he’s an exceptionally, gifted and audacious striker. When Arsenal fans see his name on the team sheet we know we have a chance no matter who we play against because we have a striker that will score the most unlikely of goals from the craziest of angles. Cesc is a form player and has at times looked lazy and incompetent this transfer saga has been going on years and while he’s kept his mouth shut for the most part he could very easily have quashed all talk of this a long time ago by telling Barcelona he’s not available and publicly declaring his loyalty.

He will not be with us during his prime, he’s most likely not going to win any trophies for us and he’s not going to openly tell Barcelona to back off. He’s behaved honourably as nicky said but he hasn’t shown loyalty, he’s under contract, he was told no so he had to make sure he didn’t sour his relationship to the fans by generally being quiet and respectful. He doesn’t have a choice really, after that long with our club to leave with all the fans hating you like Adebayor would be a very hard thing for him to take.

  • steve says:

Well,i can boldly say that he is a fantastic, special and one of the most talented young players of this time, but he is still far from being an Arsenal legend,a legend won’t want to leave his club, and many of his followers unhappy,@ his age the club still needs him,all the fans still loves and wants to keep seeing him play for AFC but i think his mind is far from London since the start of last season,he wants to leave the club that made him,the man that makes him the player he is now and the fans that have loved him so much.well the decision is left to him,but if i had an opportunity to give him any advice ,I’d ask him to wait and @ least life a trophy as captain for the Arsenal Football Club. Forever A?? gunner i will be. God bless AFC.

  • WOLF says:

Spot on with what you said. But everyone needs to get behind the club and voice the need for Fabregas to stay. The last two summers all Arsenal fans spoke of the need for Cesc to stay and how important he is. Now this summer everyone’s talking like he’s dead and gone. Everyone needs to stop giving in to Barca’s comments on our captain. Just because they want doesn’t mean they can have him. I say let’s show Cesc that Arsenal is where he really wants to be and that he will forever be appreciated here more than anywhere else in the world.

  • Alastair says:

The real measure of a man isn’t determined by how he deals with success, but rather how he deals with failure.

To be an Arsenal legend, Fabregas would have to lead this young gunners team to major honors.
