Wenger plays down summer spending issue

|

Arsene Wenger has attempted to avoid the issue of summer spending, after being quizzed after yesterday’s home defeat to Aston Villa.

The Frenchman commented that he understood the feelings of the fans who left the stadium early or booed the team, but at the same time refuses to recognise that they’d like to see the club show more ambition in the transfer market. Speaking after the game, he said:

‘You have to accept that and you have to thank those who are still in the stand. What is important is that this Club has values and respects those values. I feel fortunate that for 15 years we have played with full stands so when people are not happy they can show it. We are in a job where you have to please people and if they are not happy, we have to accept that.’

‘The fans want to win football games. They will not check how much money we spend, they want to win football games. When we don’t, they are not happy and that is completely normal. We will try to strengthen our team, of course, but the best way to keep our fans happy is to win the games.’

Yes, of course we want the team to win football games, and yes, spending money does not always guarantee that. But when you look at the team this year and last and think that just spending a couple of million more on a centre-back better than Squillaci really wouldn’t have been difficult, it is frustrating that Wenger is happy to accept mediocrity if it saves the club a bit of money.

Once again, it’s all spin from the boss. Obviously if we spent nothing this summer and won the league next year we’d be delighted, but I think we’re also big enough to say that if Wenger brought in a few more big-money and big-name signings and we STILL didn’t win anything, we would at least accept that a bit more ambition was shown.

After all, if we don’t sign anyone, and we have a repeat of this season, it will once again leave us thinking that Wenger should have spent more. It would be easier to know he at least tried.

Van der Vaart ??? Are you kidding me the last thing we need is yet another attacking central midfielder. We’ll soon end up with 11 players who play in the same position. I’m not convinced that Cahill is the answer, Samba and Sakho have the presence that we lack and the leadership abilities. Cahill hasn’t played in a competitive game for England and he’s already 25 but the main point is that he’s an all-rounder when Arsenal have a glaring weakness at set-pieces and need a specialist. Ashley Young i do agree with but with Alex Sanchez, Eden Hazard and Juan Manuel Mata probably all moving clubs in the summer there are better options for the wide positions. Problem being that there is plenty of competition for each of them.

I totally forgot to comment on the article. Spot on, Wenger needs to spend big on the defense particularly and stop the annual procedure of being linked to quality and then buying junk. It’s time to go all-out for a top defender, no excuses this time.

Bentdner,Rosicky, Denilson, Almunia, Eboue Squillaci, Diaby ?

Have you noticed how we really want get rid of players that got few chances to play or were on loan ? How will this improve the squad – really ?

We need depth and experience and to replace a few obvious players e.g. Squillaci & Almunia.
Vito & Szczesny will give each other good competition, Fabianski can stay.

Clichy should stop escorting the opposition to our goal or simply leaving us open …

Song should reduce his forward runs and play his DM role properly. It looked to me as if Song and Wilshere had switched roles when we lost to Aston Villa. At the moment, no one can cover our defense if he is playing up front. On this note, Wenger should stop silly experiments during crucial games. The only person who may give a slightly acceptable cover for defense at Arsenal now is Denilson and maybe Nasri. But just like it makes no sense for Wilshere to play behind Song, it makes no sense for Song to be an attacking midfielder with Nasri playing the holding role.

We need one more good DM and another CB.
Remember we have four competitions to play – Curling, FA, CL and PL. We need players who’ve been together a while.

Please note that the undoing of teams like Liverpool, Totenham,Aston Villa and even Man City, are the new 3 to 4 faces every six months. The players will not always fit in. You may get to number 4 or 3 at best but never number 1.

If Hleb, Flamini, Antonio Reyes, Adebayor, Kolo had stuck with Arsenal and that Rosicky never got that injury, I believe we would be a better side.

Changing players all the time is no good. Look Madrid, desperate expensive players that dive for penalties and seek yellow cards for their opponents. On a good day, we would beat them even with our current squad.
