The main reason why Arsenal fell short again this season – Inconsistency

|

For the past six years we as Arsenal fans have seen the same script over and over again. As usually, Arsenal start the season off extremely well, then at some point become serious title contenders, then blow it all away at the end.

Every year the same mistakes or mishaps occur, such as – thin squad, injuries, squad selections and even poor refereeing decisions. However, the main reason as to why Arsenal failed to clinch the Premier League title is due to the lack of consistency throughout the course of the season.

The last time Arsenal won the league, ‘the invincible’ season, they pulled off a ten game winning streak in all competitions, six of which were Premier League matches. Interesting enough, they were bundled out of the F.A Cup and Champion League by Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, but managed to beat Liverpool 4-2 in the very next Premier League fixture. That was a team that stepped up in crucial games, which had a great leader amongst the ranks, a dangerous striking force and a well disciplined back-line, unlike the current Arsenal squad, which can barely defend set-pieces against the smaller teams or even maintain a healthy lead these days.

In my opinion, this season was our best chance to lift the Premier League title in over six years, considering the fact that United and Chelsea dropped a mass number of points. However, the Gunners threw just as many points away as their title rivals this season.

Arsenal must compete better next season, and more importantly, become more consistent. They must learn to kill off games like the past teams used to do and avoid dropping silly points to the lesser sides…especially from a commanding position (the 4-4 draw to Newcastle is exactly what I’m on about guys).

Unless Arsene Wenger implements these changes and strengthen his squad accordingly this summer, then I can foresee the trophy drought continuing a lot longer.

I do agree with the fact that inconsistancy has cost us this season. The fact is we drop too many points against the lesser teams and we are unable to hold leads.

The fact is if we look at the last couple of seasons, we always drop in form at the end of the season which costs us titles. Maybe it it is due to the lack of experience in the team, maybe we lack leadership or maybe we need better players. What ever it is it needs to be corrected by the start of next season or forget about winning anything next season.

Inconsistency or not, we are lacking in important areas. Vieira said it, “they panick when attacked and concede goals as result”. He admitted that 2005 FA cup final Manure were better footballwise but we held our nerves to win on penalties.

That was a team of winners. They held on until the end. This team get easily frutrated. Sometimes, all it takes is a measure denying one to play his favoured type of football to have the team thrown off the rail.

Wenger needs to realise his dream of having super-talented players who walk the ball into the net is just a dream. Bring in someone like Ray Parlour, Vieira and Adams to man those department lest we are screwed. I cant stand another potless season.
