Gunners track Gervinho…but who exactly is he?

|

The end of the season is upon us, and with this comes the ever enthralling transfer gossip. Arsenal have already been linked with a number of summer targets, most recently has been Lille striker Gervinho…but who exactly is he?

Gervinho is a 23-year-old striker from Ivory Coast, who currently plays for Ligue 1 outfit Lille. The forward has scored 15 goals in 33 appearances for the French club this season.

He started his playing career at Belgian side K.S.K Beveren, which is coincidentally where Arsenal acquired Emmanuel Eboue from. In 2007, Gervinho joined French side Le Mans, notching up 8 goals in 59 appearances in his 2 year stay, before joining Lille in 2009 for €8 million.

This season has been Gervinho’s best, and has seen him introduced into the Ivory Coast squad, where he managed to play two games during the World Cup finals in South Africa last summer.

It appears that Gervinho has got a lot of talent to offer, and has recently expressed a desire to play in the Champions League next season. The striker has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, which include Tottenham, Newcastle, Livepool and Manchester City. However, sources indicate that he has only Arsenal or City on his agenda this summer.

Here is a video of Gervinho in action:

Now I have to say that on face value he does look an extremely talented player, but there is a world of difference between Ligue 1 and the Premier League.

He possesses great pace, and is very confident in his ability, but the Premier League is of higher standard of that in Ligue 1. Whether he can reproduce and deliver in the English game remains to be seen.

Earlier this month, it had been reported that Gervinho had rejected a multi-million pound deal to remain at Lille. However, his agent was quick to state that no talks had taken place, and wouldn’t be take place until the end of the current season. It seems that Gervinho’s future remains in his own hands, but I cannot see Lille wanting to sell such a talented youngster, who still has one year remaining on his current deal.

The jury remains out on whether or not Gervinho would be a success in England. However, Arsene Wenger is closely monitoring the forward, which means that the Frenchman must be confident of Gervinho’s ability.

We’ll just have to wait and see what develops during the summer with this one.

Gervinho is a talent. He will fit into any league be it EPL, Bundesliga , La Liga or SeriA.
I have seen this guy played at the AFCON and also at the world cup. He can operate perfectly from both flank of the field. It will be great if we can secure his service and i hope Hazard follow because these guys are playing together and the understanding betaween the two is awaresome.

I saw this player at the world cup and he did not impress me, but for what I have read in this article, it sounds like he has done well for his club this season and looks a real talent.
