Will Kroenke’s millions really put pressure on Wenger as Arsenal legend suggests?

|

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Stan Kroenke’s takeover could pile the pressure on Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners legend has watched a number of Arsenal fans grow increasingly frustrated over the Frenchman’s lack of big-name signings in the past 6 years, which many believe has aided to the clubs inability to capture silverware.

Whether or not Wenger has had the money to spend is up for debate, especially since moving to the Emirates in 2006 which cost the club an estimated £450 million. However, if Kroenke was to pump funds into the squad and Wenger was unwilling to spend, Wright believes the Arsenal faithful could turn against the Frenchman. He told The Sun:

‘If Kroenke is coming in big and he’s giving money to spend, if we still haven’t spent any money in the next couple of years because Arsene’s still doing what he’s doing, then the fans will know exactly who to blame in respect of wanting to buy players and splashing out money on players.’

‘So it will be very interesting to see Arsene’s stance now that he’s most probably going to have money readily available.’

However, Wright appears to be cautious of sole owners investing huge sums of money into clubs as he believes this approach could potentially damage reputation. The Arsenal legend does not want to see the Gunners follow in the footsteps of Chelsea, whose owner, Roman Arbramovich, simply brought success:

‘I’m somebody who does want Arsenal to start spending and spending vastly in the market to get back to where Arsenal were. But I still don’t want it to happen to the detriment, like how Chelsea are viewed now. And I wouldn’t like it how Manchester City are viewed, I’d hate that to happen.’

Do you agree with Wrighty?

Could the failure to utilize colossal amounts of cash put pressure on Wenger, and more importantly, upset his relationship with the fans?

Stan Kroenke will not invest heavy in the club. The club is run and making a avarage profit of 55 million a year. I really do want him to put money in for transfer money but I don’t see it happening. I hope I am proven wrong. I do agree with Wright though, I think if money is pumped into the club and he does not spend it then we’ll know it is Wenger who doesn’t want to spend.

Wrighty was a good footballer but wouldn’t know a good position if it hit him between the eyes. He has very little to offer in terms of opinion as his move away from Arsenal was ill advised and very badly timed.

Wenger is without doubt intrinsic to the clubs future and will not have any issues with the takeover or his future with Arsenal.
