Wenger is a broken man and so is his ‘project’

|

Over the last 3 seasons Arsenal fans have seen their cool, calm and collected manager, Arsene Wenger, become a ranting, crazed and very impatient man on the sidelines, who to me looks like he’s run out of ideas…and there are some bruised water bottles to prove it.

When Wenger came to Arsenal 15 years ago, he had as most pundits claimed inherited a back-line which featured the likes of Tony Adams. The Englishman was big, strong, had a tough mentality and not easy to get by, which is not the case this season for Arsenal, and hasn’t been since the year of the ‘Invincibles’.

Clearly the defence is an area Wenger has never considered rebuilding, with the best buy to fill it being Thomas Vermaelen in recent years. The Belgian may be ‘small’ for a centre-back, but he is deceivingly strong and reads the game well. This season, Arsenal’s back four leaves a lot to be desired, but Wenger insists nothing is wrong even though many people believe it is.

The likes of Per Mertesacker, Gary Cahill and Leighton Baines have all been linked with a move to the Gunners this summer. Clearly these are the players we need to strengthen our defence, but Wenger refuses to listen.

With set-pieces being Arsenal’s Achilles heel every season, its obvious Wenger should spend some of the suggested £40 million on established players, and not ones he can develop.

A minority of Arsenal fans have been protesting for Wenger to leave, others still believe in the term “In Wenger We Trust”. When you think of how much he’s done for the North London club, fans should still believe in him. However, for us to ‘keep the faith’, an established player or two will have to be brought in. But If the Frenchman doesn’t spend this summer, then I too will be calling for our beloved manager’s head.

Wenger needs to change his philosophy and his style play. We need to learn how to win dirty because pretty football doesn’t always win you games. Wenger needs to buy established dfenders like the writer said within his article. He also needs to invest in experienced players in the midfield and upfront.

I for one still believe he is a good manager provided he changes and start buying established players. You can see frustrations on the face of Cesc, Van Persie. These guys want to have some other players of their quality which they think would enhance club’s chances.

Anything less than 3 new signings and I will be calling for Wenger exit. If he wants, he can get around £75m by selling both Bendtner and Charmach for £15m each. Denilson could fetch £10m or more and Diaby can also bring in another £10m or more. Eboue, Scillacci and Clichy can bring in another £30m and Ashavin will fdefinitely need to go and £15m is a given. Frankly, Cesc will have to reconsider if he want to leave or stay but not be in 2 places. He can fetch £40m. I am close to £100m in transfres alone which if added to £40m in the kitty could buy you quality to play along Van Persie, Wilshere, Ramsey and Walcott.

A DM and a CB and left sided FB and 2 strikers. Chesser is fine in goal.

Your article is very well written and is very convincing, however I think that Wenger leaving would be a disaster. Just imagine the headline “Wenger Sacked.” What would happen next? Pat Rice would take over, Cesc would leave along with Nasri, Clichy, Sagna, Song, Van Persie and possibly Wilshere. So then what? Who would want to manage a team who demand Champions League football but have an aweful squad? Then we would finish in seventh and just qualify for the Europa League and Spurs would finish above us! And we would have to wait years before we even qualified for the Champions League again, if we don’t keep Wenger all that will probably happen. Be patient. Every manager has his downs, even José and Sir Alex have had downs. In Wenger we trust!

You do realize that Wenger is not the only coach we have ever had. And the only reason Pat Rice is still around is cause Wenger begs him to.

    • Jim says:

If Wenger leaves, Cesc, Nasri, RvP will leave the club with their mentor. If Wenger stays, Cesc, Nasri, RvP will leave for more ambitious clubs that can deliver them medals.

We all want Wenger to stay and change his methods. Wenger to change? I doubt it will ever happen.

it bothers me how arsenal supporters opinions quickly change….don’t get me wrong I do feel we need to let a few players go in the summer and bring in a few fresh faces in (NOT necessarily an overhaul nor a change of our philosophy both on the financial and foot-balling side)….miyaichi, lansbury, vela,Bartley and frimpong should break into the first team…..at centre-back I’m not sure as I feel djorou and vermaelen would make a formidable partnership with koscielny, Bartley, miquel and squillachi (yes him as I don’t think he’ll leave after just one season and players don’t become crap after just one season…).injuries though are inevitable so yes a centre-back signing is definitely needed as its probable for us to end up playing with Bartley and miquel at the back (ha ha ha).in midfield I think If we are to sign anyone it should be Scott Parker…he’s the leader we’ve been moaning about since the Liverpool game 😉 and I feel wilshere could learn a lot from him (in both the arsenal shirt and the England shirt).upfront I’m happy with RVP being 1st choice as I do feel he is the best striker in England( YES I SAID IT…BETTER THAN ROONEY, TORRES AND DROGBA in every aspect;finishing,work-rate;the attitude and of course FLAIR!!!), as much as I like chamakh I feel he is not good enough to be our second choice (doesnt have to leave)….if RVP is injured we need someone who can bang in 20 goals a season (no names come to mind at the moment though although some have suggested benzema and cavani (I like him and he’s tall too lol)….HOW ABOUT giving Theo a chance to play there with ryo and nasri providing him with balls to pounce on?)……..I’ve heard hazard’s name being thrown in the mix but I’m not sure as lille want him back on loan (with a 20 million pound price-tag as well).oh yeah at goalkeeper scszesny is just FINE AND FAB is a good second choice as well.we as fans need to also do our part and kep the faith, i bet most who’ll read this blog became fgans of arsenal in the Wenger era. we must remenber why we love arsenal and we must be careful to not let so called pundits turn us against the greatest arsenal manager of all time!!!

A few new established players is exactly what the club needs, Szczesny is fantastic in goals, so no need for a GK! A few new CB’s and a strike partner for RVP who has the same qualities will ease the pressure wen injuries begin to pop up! Next season will be full of suprises, if we do spend in the summer, winning the EPL won’t be a suprise! 🙂

fair comments in the article. I would be amazed if he sold more than 2 players in the 8 or more that nearly every arsenal fan has identified as not arsenal quality. I would then be amazed if he brought in more than 2…he just doesnt operate like that anymore. He needs to buy quality players as an absolute neccesity to show RVP, Cesc, and nasri that we have ambition otherwise they will want out…thats obvious surely!
we are long overdue some silverware..i recall AW promised some this season!….but i just feel that Wenger isnt going to change…its almost as if he clings to his project like some security blanket.(A project that has failed for 6 seasons)
He may have started to lose the dressing room now, so that the players have no belief in his methodology, (i would say tactics but i sincerely believe he doesn’t have any…its more like a style of play generally).
Sometimes its better to throw out the non-performing component and get a new one, rather than mess about, waste time and money trying to fix it. We need a fresh start to give this club some optimistic impetus.I would rather start again with a new manager than have any hope that Wenger will eventually change. I really dont see any change in policy from him…and he has said (defiantly)as much in recent interviews. If he stays then he owes the fans (and players) a clear statement of intent as to how he is going to turn this worsening situation around
