Missed chance or same old story with Arsenal?

|

As we all know, Arsenal travelled to White Hart Lane last night to take on Spurs in what was expected to be a highly anticipated North London derby. Thankfully it delivered.

Spurs, who were coming off a Champions league exit at the hands of Real Madrid, needed all three points to be in with a chance of a top four finish this season. Whilst Arsenal, who would have still been shell-shocked with the 1-1 draw to Liverpool last Sunday, needed a victory over their bitter rivals in order to keep their title hopes alive.

The Gunners were given a glimmer of hope prior to their game with Spurs, as the night before, Newcastle held Manchester United to a 0-0 draw at St James Park. The draw made Wojciech Szczesny’s statement ‘we can still win the title’ a reality for Arsenal.

Arsenal took a 5 minute lead through Theo Walcott after receiving a through pass by Cesc Fabregas. However, Spurs retaliated 2 minutes later thanks to Rafael van der Vaart.

The Gunners then re-established their lead, as Samir Nasri rifled in a shot from outside the box, before Robin van Persie made it 3-1 to Arsenal. However, Spurs managed to pull a goal back before half-time thanks to Tom Huddlestone’s rocket. In the second-half, Redknapps’s side managed to equalize after Aaron Lennon was brought down in the penalty area by Szczesny, evidently, Van der Vaart converted to make it 3-3. In my opinion, had the full-back not fallen asleep, the penalty would have never occurred.

The result meant that Chelsea, who beat Birmingham 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last night, moved into second place above Arsenal due to goal difference. Both London clubs currently sit 6 points behind Fergie’s men, with both clubs still yet to play United.

Arsenal fans are now probably used to the feeling of their team giving away advantages and dropping points when only a win is required!

So who do we point the accusing finger at this time? Arsene Wenger, the players? Or do we wait for another team to assist us with closing the gap on United and then screw up again?

The only question I want answered is – are we a title winning side? Or the Premier Leagues best entertainers?

‘Keep the faith’ – a phrase that we have been echoing for the past 6 years now, yet nothing has ensued. For once I’d just like to say ‘this is our year!!!’, but it appears we may have to ‘keep the faith’ for another season.

It’s the same old story with Arsenal. They are not capable of closing games out and the defence is still rubbish. It just proves when it comes to the business end of the season and the pressure is on, Arsenal crumble and have no bottle.
