Gunnersphere asks: Should Jens Lehmann replace Manuel Almunia for the remainder of the season?

|

A couple of weeks ago, just after the 2-2 draw against West Brom in fact where Manuel Almunia made that idiotic mistake, I posted up a poll asking my site viewers/readers the question – should Jens Lehmann replace Manuel Almunia in goal for the remaining 9 games of Arsenal’s season?

I’m not going to take this time to bash Almunia for what he did at the Hawthorns because it’s already been well documented…that, and the fact that I ripped in to him the following day after he made that brainless error, which cost us two points.

I think everybody from my family and friends down to my ‘tweeps’ on Twitter know exactly how I feel about the Spanish goalkeeper. I simply do not want to see him in an Arsenal kit again, not this season or the season after that. As you guys can tell, I’ve had enough of his tom foolery costing the team, and if I were to answer my own question you could probably guess where my vote would go.

Moving on. As we all know the legendary Jens Lehmann is back at the Emirates, which quite rightly sparked shock and excitement across North London. Even though the German hasn’t played a competitive match in over a year, the 41-year-old is preparing himself for a shock call-up this Saturday against Blackburn. However, Lehmann participated in a reserve match earlier in the week in order to regain his match fitness, but unfortunately, from what I’ve heard, he was not that good…still nuts, but not that good in terms of decision making and positioning.

Anyway as I stated earlier, Gunnersphere.com conducted a poll on the matter and asked whether Jens Lehmann should take Almunia’s place in the starting line-up for the remaining 9 matches of the season…here is the outcome of the poll.

Results showed that 74% of votes cast (80 in total) believe that Lehmann should replace Almunia between the sticks for the remainder of the season, whilst 26% of Arsenal fans think Wenger should stick with Almunia.

As I’ve said before, and evidently, will say again, Wenger should grant Lehmann a chance tomorrow against a lesser team in Blackburn, because in my opinion, the German can’t possibly do any worse than Almunia has already done this season. Recent reports are suggesting that Almunia will start at the Emirates tomorrow, but in my view, Lehmann should be given a chance.

Almunia is rubbish, Lehmann should start, but he won’t because Wenger loves Almunia. What he see’s in him is beyond me. I know Lehmann is not sharp but that’s because he’s been out of the game for a year, what’s Almunia’s excuse.
