Shrews striker and Gooner Jake Robinson talks to Gunnersphere

|

Jake Robinson, born in Brighton, a product of his hometown’s youth system, fulfilled what must be every young man’s dream by writing his name into his local team’s history books as The Seagull’s youngest ever goal scorer at 16 years of age.

Robinson went on to make 123 appearances and score 13 goals for the club between two fairly successful loan spells at Aldershot. His contract with Brighton ended in 2009 and in the summer of the same year agreed a two year contract with Shrewsbury Town.

The move up North didn’t get off to the greatest of starts as Jake struggled to get his name on the score-sheet with only 4 goals in 36 appearances. It could be said that Paul Simpson’s tactics, Shrew’s manager at the time, didn’t particularly suit the attributes of the 24-year-old striker, as he struggled to make an impact on a game that largely consisted of long balls. But with a change of management came a change of fortune, and as so very often is the case, he thrived in the early stages of this season, scoring a hat-trick on the opening day of the season before going on to score eight goals in twelve starts for the League Two side.

So how does this relate to Gunnersphere.com I hear you ask?

Good job you did too. Well, Jake is an ardent Arsenal fan who dreams of pulling on the famous red and white strip of our beloved Gunners. He told me:

‘I became an Arsenal fan in the same way 90% of football fans are decided. It was bred into me by my dad, who is the biggest fan I know. Now there’s me and my two brothers who are as mad as he is.’

‘The moment I remember the most is not a particularly good one. It was travelling to Paris for the Champions League final on an overnight ferry without a ticket, hoping to find a tout or get lucky finding a good price. Of course when we got there prices were as high as 3500 euros so ended up watching from a Parisian bar as we lost late on to Barca. But all part of the fun of football I guess.’
