Should Arsenal pursuit Christian Eriksen this summer?

|

Ajax fear that a mass bidding war is likely to commence over midfielder Christian Eriksen this summer following the youngster’s superb display against England on Wednesday night. Should Arsenal be in the mix for his signature this summer?

What should have been Jack Wilshere’s night, in fact turned out to be Eriksen’s (sorry Jack, but it’s the truth). The 18 year-old Dane simply stole all the headlines; it’s no wonder why the Ajax midfielder has been tipped by many for a bright future in the game, especially if he pulls off performances like that.

Eriksen, who turns 19 on Monday, has so far made 28 appearances for the Eredivisie side this season, whilst managing to bag 3 goals along the way. Having already lost Luis Suarez, who was their best player, to Liverpool in the January transfer window, the Amsterdam giants now fear the prospect of losing their latest star in the upcoming summer.

The gifted midfielder, who signed for the Dutch outfit in 2008 for an estimated £1 million from Odense Boldklub, has a contract at the club until 2014. However, this is unlikely to discourage interested sides, including Arsenal, who have been monitoring the youngster’s progress for sometime now. Even though the midfielder has attracted several clubs recently, Ajax believe, and more importantly, hope that those interested respect the contract length. A source at the club stated:

‘A lot is being said about Christian because of his performances. There has been interest in him in the past and we expect interest to grow, sadly. But he has a contract until 2014 so we hope people respect that.’

Ajax offered Eriksen an improved deal last year in order to protect the player’s market value, which of course he accepted. At the time of signing his new contract, Eriksen stated that a move away from the Amsterdam Arena would be untimely at this stage of his career. The young Dane told De Telegraaf, a Dutch publication, in April last year:

‘I can still learn a lot here, I’m not finished yet and I hope I can mean a lot for the club.’

I think he is good player, but to be honest I don’t know too much about him, if he plays like he did against England constantly then he is a good buy. The only problem is where would he fit into the arsenal team. A player like that deserves to play constantly and if Arsenal are not able to do this then another club should get him.
