Gunnersphere asks: Can Arsenal really achieve the quadruple?

|

There has been a lot of talk about Arsenal becoming the first ever side in English football to achieve an unprecedented quadruple this season. Arsene Wenger believes the feat can be accomplished, which has led to a number of Arsenal stars, including Samir Nasri and Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, echoing their manager’s thoughts. However, can the Gunners truly achieve the quadruple?

Despite matches mounting up, Wenger believes that his side are capable of making history by being the first English team ever to lift all the silverware this term. Following their 3-0 win over West Ham at the end of January, The Frenchman told The Sun that a quadruple is not out of the question:

“We are motivated to give our best in all the competitions, that is for sure. What can we win? We are in a position where we want to give our best and afterwards we will see where we end up. What is good is we are in mid-January and we are still in all four competitions, so let’s go for it.’

A week later, Arsenal swept aside Leeds United in the F.A Cup, which had both Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas believing in their manager’s views on a possible quadruple. In a post match interview, Nasri told ITV1:

‘We want to win every competition and this cup is really important to us.’

Alongside Nasri was Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, who repeated what his team-mate had stated:

‘As Samir said, we want to go all the way in every competition.’

Three weeks have past and Arsenal are still in all four competitions. In fact, the Gunners have booked a Carling Cup final against Birmingham City, which if they manage to win, would break their 6 year trophy drought. Wenger’s men also sit second in the Premier League, four points behind Manchester United, are in the 5th round of the F.A Cup, and knockout stages of the Champions League.

Gunnersphere.com felt it was only right to conduct a poll on the matter, which asked visitors the simple question – Can Arsenal really achieve the quadruple? Yes, no chance or not sure were the three possible answers.

Surprisingly, the outcome of this poll was extremely close. Results showed that 36% of votes cast (84 in total) believe that the Gunners don’t stand a chance of bagging all four trophies this season. However, 32% of Gooners believe their club can be the first in history to capture the quadruple, whilst 32% remain unsure on the matter.

Personally, as much as I would love for it to ensue, I simply can’t see Arsenal achieving the improbable quadruple. Ultimately, I think (and many will probably agree) that the quest for all four trophies will come down to whether the Gunners can knockout Barcelona in the Champions League in the upcoming weeks. If they manage to do this then the probability of the quadruple will dramatically increase for the Gunners. However, even if this were to occur, I believe there will be too many games ahead for the Arsenal squad to handle.

I truly believe we can capture a domestic treble at best this season, but will remain hopeful of triumphing in all four competitions as long as we’re in them.

I echo your thoughts here which is why I clicked Not Sure… the games are coming so thick and fast I think the momentum created by beating Barca would take us on 2/3 weeks where we’d be on cloud 9 (mini invincible run)…

Now let’s hope Wednesday goes to plan 🙂

    Great stuff as usual

It’s not impossible, but really really hard.

Arsenal may have to play a game that’s unnatural to them as they’ll get played off the park trying to play Barca’s game.

…think you could win domestic honours though, but are ironically relying on Chelsea a fair bit.

I really hope swe can win the quadruple but I doubt it. It will all depend on the Barca game, we are in the final of the Carling Cup, 4 points behind Utd and still in the FA Cup. I personally would be happy with the Carling Cup and Premier League, The FA Cup would be a bonus if we win it.
