Are Arsenal truly in need of another striker?

|

According to Portuguese publication A Bola, Arsenal have renewed their interest in Porto striker Radamel Falcao, despite having a bid for the Colombian forward rejected last summer.

The 24-year-old joined the Portuguese side in the summer of 2009, and has been a revelation ever since for the consistent Champions League participants. The Colombian international is in scintillating form at present. So far this season, Falcao has managed to bag 18 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions, and looks set to add to his tally by the end of the season. If that wasn’t impressive enough, Falcao’s Porto record currently stands at 53 goals in 64 appearances, something quite incredible to say the very least.

Arsene Wenger may be looking to bolster his attacking options this winter, after seeing his side fail to capitalize on Manchester City earlier in the week, despite dominating from the get-go. The Frenchman is a keen admirer of the forward having watched him in the Champions League last year.

It’s very clear to see that Andrey Arshavin is in poor form at present, and whilst the return of Robin Van Persie has boosted the Gunners attack significantly in the last couple of weeks, the Dutchman has unfortunately become and injury-prone player. In addition to this, Carlos Vela seems to be heading out on loan this January, and Nicklas Bendtner proved once again that he isn’t as good as he claims to be. Taking this into account, do Arsenal require another striker on board?

As stated earlier, the North London club did make an enquiry about the Porto man during last summer, but were knocked back by the Portuguese giants. However, with the uncertain futures of front-men Bendtner and Vela this winter, Arsenal may make a fresh approach for the Colombian in the upcoming weeks.

Undoubtedly, Porto will place a heavy price tag on their prolific hitman (whose current contract expires in 2013) to fend off interested parties this winter. Arsenal may have to splash out approximately £17-20 million to acquire their man this winter. Whether they take their interest further after seeing such a price is undetermined.

Arsenal needs a central defender and a dependable striker to boost its chance of winning the title

He sounds like a good player, my only question is who do they play in Portuguese league that is good. Everybody know there are only three teams which are Porto, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica, other than these teams the rest are rubbish, so personally I’m not impressed with these stats. Now if he went to elsewhere and proved it there then fair enough I’ll say he’s a good player. I think Arsenal need a reliable striker, so for me he doesn’t fit the bill but I could be wrong.
