Arsenal are weighing up a shock summer move for on-loan Hoffenheim attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to The Sun.

Arsene Wenger has asked the 22-year-old’s former Reading boss Brian McDermott about the Iceland international.

McDermott said:

‘I spoke to Arsene about him and you could not tell me he could not play for Arsenal.’

Sigurdsson, who joined Brendan Rodgers’ Swans in January on loan until the end of the season, has netted six goals in 11 Premier League outings and has been arguably one of the league’s standout performers of the current campaign.

But is there any truth to McDermott’s words? Could the Hoffenheim midfielder play for Arsenal?

To be honest, looking at our creative department, I think McDermott has a point.

The Icelandic star has great technical ability, an eye for goal, is a set-piece specialist and loves to shot from long range (something a lot of our current crop is afraid to do). He would certainly give the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Alex Song and Tomas Rosicky a run for their money. However, I just don’t see this move transpiring.

In addition, I would like to ask the question – would he be able to make the step up to Arsenal, having played for Reading, Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra in the past? One doubts it.

Moreover, with Arsenal already bagging Lukas Podolski from FC Koln and reportedly tracking down Rennes star Yann M’Vila, I don’t think there will be any room for Sigurdsson, especially once our entire midfield are fully fit and available.

We’ll have to wait and see how this pans out, but I don’t expect anything to come of this rumour.

He has achieved what he has achieved this season in the EPL playing against Arsenal’s rivals. Swansea rivals Arsenal as a ball playing team and I agree the move may not eventuate but I have little doubt the player could “step up” – he is already playing at EPL level.

Is playing in the EPL, but who for? Swansea. I think what the writer is tryna get at is is he good enough for Arsenal? Bigger club, higher expectations etc. I don’t think he is any better than an Everton player tbh

Surely if he can score 6 goals in 12 games for mid table Swansea then he is good enough for top 4 team Arsenal!
