As the season draws to a close, we end it trophyless yet again.
However, despite the drought, we can pick out a few positives. One of which is that the Emirates has now become a fortress. One Arsenal player who thinks this too is Theo Walcott.
We have only lost two Premier League games at home this season. The first, a very unlucky 2-0 defeat to Liverpool and the second we narrowly lost 2-1 to Manchester United. Other than those setbacks we have been stubborn at home, winning our last five on the bounce. Not forgetting the 5-2 mauling we dished out to our north London rivals Spurs.
This has all been down to the support the fans have been showing in my opinion.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s mouth-watering home clash with Manchester City, Walcott believes teams now hate coming to the Emirates:
‘The Emirates is starting to become a fortress, which is what we want it to be.
‘Away fans and players don’t like to come to the Emirates, especially over the last few months.
‘It helps us players, it is like having an extra man on the field.
‘That is with the help of the fans, they develop that.
‘I think the fans expect us to win every game, and we expect to go out there, play our best and we feel we can win every game.’
I for one have to agree with Theo.
The Emirates is a fortress now. Not many teams like to come at us when we’re home. They’d rather sit back and take a point, or sneak a win through luck.
The fans have been the key, as Walcott suggested. The 12th man can make a massive difference at times. If your home supporters get behind the team from the word go, then the away team and supporters become even more intimidated.
If we keep this up next season and improve on our away results then we will unquestionably end our seven year trophy drought.
