Time to stand up and be counted

After three successive league defeats and a lacklustre draw against Bolton, serious questions were being asked about the management, the team’s ability and the whereabouts of a number of spinal columns.

A 7-1 win makes a difference.

Sections of fans were issuing calls to arms, mostly directed at Arsene Wenger, who, in some quarters, is being cast as the only villain of the piece.

A 7-1 win makes a difference.

Theo Walcott, who had one of his best games in an Arsenal shirt, has made the point that maybe some of this vilification of Arsene isn’t justified:

‘The boss always takes a lot of stick from everyone criticising him, but us players need to look up to him because he’s been taking it all.

‘We are the ones who go out there and put out the performances and sometimes they have not been good enough.

‘There are so many world-class players in the dressing room, so it is disappointing when we come back from Bolton with a 0-0 draw where we had a lot of chances. It has just been one of those frustrating seasons. Hopefully a lot of those frustrations came out against Blackburn, where everybody stood up for themselves.’

Once you cross that white line it’s pretty much down to the players. The manager can coach the players to an inch of their lives, but if once out on the pitch they don’t put in the required shift, then it’s the players’ responsibility. Too many games this season, too many players have disappeared and lost the belief and the battle when the chips were down.

As Theo says, hopefully a 7-1 win will make a difference, reignite the belief in the players and make them stand up and be accountable.

The majority of the fans believe until the bitter end and so should the team!!!
