According to Italian outlet CalcioMercarto (via The Daily Express,) Arsenal attempted to sign AC Milan youngster Manuel Locatelli but could not get a deal to go through over the summer.

Arsenal reportedly watched the teenager a number of times before lodging a bid but the Rossoneri did not want to see him leave the San Siro as they feel that he has got a good future ahead of him.

The defensive midfielder has made seven appearances in Serie A so far this season adding two goals to his name and looks as though he will be a mainstay for the Italian club this year.

Arsenal did sign Granit Xhaka for the holding role position in the summer as the Swiss international joined from Borussia Monchengladbach and he has featured a number of times for the Gunners so far this season.

Xhaka is competing with Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny for the holding position alongside Santi Cazorla in Arsenal’s midfield.
