Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has warned Arsenal that continued failure to reach the latter stages of the Champions League could see superstar players such as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez seek moves away from the club.

The Gunners start their Champions League campaign for 2016-17 against French powerhouses Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, with the first Group A clash to be played at the Parc des Princes.

Arsenal have struggled to make it through to the final four or eight teams in recent years, with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich eliminating the North London side in the round of 16.

Hoddle has stated that keeping players of Ozil and Sanchez’s calibre happy means challenging for major silverware.

With the key attacking duo in contract talks but not having signed on the dotted line as yet, the former England manager has stated that Arsenal need to improve their performances in Europe.

“Arsenal’s repeated failure in this competition under Arsene Wenger since they competed in the final in 2006 and the semi-finals in 2009 is more than a curiosity now,” Hoddle wrote in The Daily Mail.

“It is becoming a threat to keeping their best players.

“Ozil and Sanchez have yet to commit to new deals with the Gunners. No doubt they will wait to see if Arsenal can compete rather than just make up the numbers in the knock-out stages before they decide where their future lies.”
