Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has admitted he would love to see Arsene Wenger go against his natural tendencies and spend money freely in the transfer market.

The Gunners boss is notoriously thrifty with spending the North London club’s money and only splashes the cash on players he really wants at the Emirates Stadium.

Wenger’s caution with money has seen Arsenal outspent by the likes of Chelsea and the Manchester clubs in recent years and has become a frustration for the club’s fans.

Keown has stated that it is not in the Frenchman’s nature to spend money haphazardly but admitted that it would be intriguing to see his former club match the spending of the other Premier League financial heavyweights.

“Wenger is a very pragmatic man, and I would love to see him throw his economic principles out of the window for one season and see what happened,” he told The Daily Mail.

“But this will never happen. For him to spend like Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United do, it would have to come as an order from the board.”

Arsenal spent considerable money on the likes of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi over the course of the summer.

Wenger has also proven that he will on occasion spend big, with the high-profile additions of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez key examples.
