Former Arsenal striker John Hartson has stated that the North Londoners rode their luck against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night and would have been beaten had Edinson Cavani been more clinical.

The Gunners fell behind after less than a minute after the Uruguay international converted from close range, but the former Napoli man missed a number of other gilt-edged chances to close the game out for the hosts.

As a result, Alexis Sanchez struck with 13 minutes remaining to give the Premier League side a point and ensure they did not lose their most-difficult Group A clash.

Hartson has been outspoken about his former side’s performance and stated that Cavani should have buried the Gunners earlier in the affair.

“The man Arsenal have to thank on the night was Cavani,” Hartson told BT Sport, as published in The Daily Mail.

“On another night, he gets a hat-trick. He leads the line very well, he makes good runs.

“For the amount of good chances he gets… he normally needs three chances to score a goal. If he was a natural, more comfortable in front of goal I think he’d be one of the best strikers in the world.

“He’s not composed. He’s a top centre forward around the world but if he was a more natural goalscorer it would put millions on his head.”

Arsenal had substitute Olivier Giroud sent off but in general will be pleased to have left the Parc des Princes with a point to their name.

Reserve goalkeeper David Ospina made a number of crucial saves from Cavani to play his part in the visitors’ draw.
