gonzalo higuainHaving failed in their pursuit of Karim Benzema, Arsenal are now interested in signing Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, according to Spanish journalist Kike Marin.

With Benzema now out of reach, Arsene Wenger now has to turn his attention elsewhere if he is still keen on bringing in a new forward before the summer transfer deadline day. But the Frenchman insists he is not close to signing anyone, which may worry a few of the Arsenal faithful, including me.

However, El Confidential reporter Marin says Wenger is still in the hunt for a new No.9, and has turned to former target Higuain.

Last night at 9:59pm, Marin tweeted:

‘@Arsenal Wenger still looking for a 9 His first targets have failed and today has been INTERESTED in Higuain #Arsenal.’

At the start of the summer transfer window, Higuain was constantly and continuously linked with a move to Arsenal, but the £67.3 million release clause in his contract proved to be a problem at the time.

But with deadline day fast approaching, Wenger may succumb to the peer pressure and give Napoli what they want for the Argentine striker.

However, with Napoli failing to qualify for the Champions League, Wenger could get his man cheaper than expected, especially if the player himself decides to push for a move away.

The 27-year-old scored 29 goals for Napoli last season and is entering his ‘golden years’ – to quote Wenger.

He may not be the fans’ first-choice striker to come in this summer, but desperate time calls for desperate measures, and Wenger may well be forced to make this move happen to appease the fans, as well as give the side the attacking reinforcements it currently needs.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Higuain come in!

Stupid Wenger. to pay 60+million for a reserve player at Real Madrid. You don’t know what you are doing after all these years The longer you stays at arsenal, the worse you at getting. Why every year you left this late in the tranfere market?

Nothing wrong with the team…its a long season…give the man credit…no one else has been that successful…you can’t be first every year not even Chelsea.

Does this club have any ambition to win the league or fight for Champions League?

I think the fans have seen enough of this and time will tell if Wenger is right. Excuses will come in for Wenger and I forsee another year of struggle.

The board is just doing business and not looking at the bigger picture. Making the club great in football requires passion to buy the best and Arsenal is not there yet.

It’s disappointing but that’s the bitter truth. Tomorrow, the likes of Alexis or Carzola will leave due to lack of ambition.
