Well it appears Arsene Wenger will have to pursue another defensive midfielder this month after Morgan Schneiderlin pledged his short-term future to Southampton.
The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from St Mary’s, with Arsenal and Spurs keen on the French international.
However, Schneiderlin believes he will remain put at least until the end of the season with the Saints as it is ‘difficult to leave in January’, though concedes he will re-evaluate his options this summer.
Speaking to Telefoot, he said:
‘It’s always difficult to leave in January.
‘I think I’ll finish the season at Southampton and we’ll see what will happen next. I don’t set my mind on these things anymore.
‘What should happen will happen. Since this summer, I learned that you should never think that you’re gone before you actually did.’
Schneiderlin saw many of his team-mates leave Southampton last summer and was prepared to follow suit until the Hampshire club blocked any potential move away, thus staying put.
Wenger is a keen admirer of the midfielder and was thought to be considering the possibility of adding him to his squad this month.
However, it seems Wenger will have to wait until the end of the season before he can get his hands on Schneiderlin.
So with the Saints man out of the running to join the club this January and Wenger keen to bolster his midfield defensively, who should he turn to now?

Don’t think he will join Arsenal
