Ron VlaarIf Tuesday night’s 3-3 draw to Anderlecht is anything to go by then Arsene Wenger desperately needs to sign a new centre-back when the January transfer window opens.

Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk has been mentioned as a possible target for Arsenal but the Daily Mail now suggests that Wenger is considering a move for Ron Vlaar.

The Gunners were reportedly interested in the powerful defender during the end of the summer transfer window after letting Thomas Vermaelen leave for Barcelona.

And with Laurent Koscielny out injured and Wenger using left-back Nacho Monreal in the centre, the Frenchman is contemplating another move for Vlaar, 29, in January.

The Dutchman is out of contract at the end of the season and although Villa would love to keep him on their books, they risk losing him on a free unless they decide to cash in on the defender in the New Year.

But would Vlaar be a good signing for the Gunners? I believe so.

Having watched him play on a number of occasions I believe he could do a job for us and challenge Per Mertesacker for his place in the side.

Vlaar already has Premier League experience under his belt and although he isn’t the quickest off the mark, his positioning and strength make up for it.

It would be a wise move for Wenger to undertake and possibly our best option out there at the moment. And depending on cost, I think Arsenal should seriously consider a move for the Dutchman.

Vlaar could well solve our defensive problems and tighten up our back-line.
