Why he would be an ideal replacement for Vermaelen

Daniel AggerSo Thomas Vermaelen looks set to leave the Emirates before the summer transfer window closes, and should this ensue, then Arsene Wenger will have to attempt to replace the Belgian, as the Frenchman will only have Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker to call upon. Yes, Wenger has signed Calum Chambers to strengthen our back-line and add options in defence, but many will question whether the 19-year-old will be able to fill Vermaelen’s boots.

So let’s just say Vermaelen does leave, who should Wenger bring in to replace him? This is a question, for the time being at least, that I cannot give an answer to.

But recent reports are suggesting that Arsenal are preparing to make a bid for Liverpool’s Daniel Agger. This has me baffled but intrigued at the same time.

Although Agger is an accomplished Premier League centre-back, the Denmark international has had more injury problems than I’ve had roast dinners.

But perhaps a move for the 29-year-old wouldn’t be as dumbfounded as many will make out.

When I first read of our interest in Agger, who is apparently also wanted by Danish outfit Brondy, I wondered why we would be looking at an injury-prone defender, and asked to myself what could he add to our squad.

However, having reviewed our interest in him properly, I can understand why Wenger is planning a move for him.

Firstly, Liverpool will more than likely consider selling Agger, especially after signing Dejan Lovren from Southampton.

And secondly, his elegant defensive play would suit our style of play at the Emirates and he already has a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt.

Yes Agger has suffered a number of injuries in the past but he could be the ideal replacement for Vermaelen because of this, as the latter hardly played last season. It’s basically, a like-for-like switch.

Koscielny and Mertesacker will undoubtedly be Wenger’s first-choice defensive partnership, regardless of who the Frenchman tries to bring in to replace Vermaelen. But Agger would more than likely find first-team opportunities easier to come by at Arsenal than at Liverpool this season and could rediscover his form under Wenger.

Would Agger be a suitable replacement for Vermaelen?

Aristotle; I totally agree with you. There are better players out there for example Micha Richards who is an Arsenal fan.

I prefer nastastic to agger. He’s young more versatile and strong. Not too injure prone and future player

We don’t need Agger or whatever he is called. What I don’t undrstand is why we are attracted to only outcasts/rejected players in their clubs. Why can’t we go for Hummel for Christ sake.
