Is the FA Cup our best hope of silverware this season?

Arsene WengerIn the wake of Arsenal’s hammering at Anfield on Saturday, former Gunner David O’Leary believes the FA Cup is Arsene Wenger’s side’s best chance of winning silverware this season.

Despite their heavy loss, Arsenal still remain in the title hunt and are only a point behind league leaders Chelsea and host Manchester United on Wednesday night.

However, O’Leary reckons either Chelsea or Manchester City will come out on top in the Premier League title chase and says Arsenal’s best chance of breaking their current eight year trophy drought this season is by triumphing in the FA Cup:

‘I’d love to be proved wrong, but Chelsea and Manchester City are the favourites. Jose Mourinho seems to get teams over the line.

‘So the FA Cup is the one where you can see them cracking this long spell (eight years) without a trophy.

‘That would be great and that’s where I see them.’

We have a tough run of league fixtures coming up, starting with United on Wednesday night, and should we somehow manage to come out of it unscathed and remain in the hunt for the title then why can’t we win it? It’s certainly a tall order but it’s not impossible.

I can’t see us winning the Champions League and honestly believe we will struggle to get by Bayern over two legs. But stranger things have happened in football and as long as we are in it we have a chance – even if it is a very small one.

I agree with O’Leary that the FA Cup is probably our best chance of winning silverware this season – if we get by Liverpool on Saturday then we can go all the way.
