Is this man’s Arsenal future hanging in the balance?

Thomas VermaelenThomas Vermaelen. He’s a player who is quickly becoming forgotten at the Emirates thanks to what can only described as solid and assured performances from both Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the heart of our defence.

The robust Frenchman and Lanky German have become Arsene Wenger’s first-choice centre-back pairing since Vermaelen’s exile from the starting line-up after that 2-1 away loss to Spurs on March 3rd last season. The Belgian has since struggled to reclaim his spot in the side and finds himself in a position he will not be too happy about, warming the bench.

But who can blame Wenger?

Per and Kos have simply been superb in the back for us this season and at the end of last. They compliment each other brilliantly, with one possessing pace and power while the other has the height and positional awareness. I t just works. And as the saying goes, if it’s not broken don’t fix it, right?

However Vermaelen will want to be playing football week in, week out, especially with the World Cup just eight months away, and, currently, he isn’t doing so.

As a fan, it’s great to see that we have someone like Vermaelen who can come off from the bench, but for the player himself, a senior Belgian international, it’s not ideal at all.

I don’t know if Wenger has lost confidence in the 27-year-old’s ability or whether he is just sticking to something that’s working (Kos and Per) – I hope it to be the latter.

But if things don’t change for the Verm, he may well consider his future and eventually seek a move away from Arsenal. I wouldn’t like to think this to happen, but it could, as soon as January even! It’s a far-fetched thought but its not an impossible thought. Players want to be playing for their national sides at the World Cup and if they aren’t featuring for theirs clubs on a regular basis then they are usually overlooked. Vermaelen may have these thoughts in his mind in the lead up to the January transfer window.

If he remains at the club until the end of the season (which I think he will) and things haven’t adjusted for him (still playing second fiddle to Per and Kos) then he could well be our next big-name star leaving the club during the summer transfer window.

I can see where you are coming from but if your conclusions are valid then how can we ever have a squad(as Man Utd have done for years)that has top quality cover throughout. The secret ala Ferguson is to somehow keep everyone happy and I am sure with our track record that injuries will ensure that Vermalin has a big part to play before long.

Leave him alone he will feature in soon the others need a breather dont put words in his mouth please

  • Fedelix says:

He wil be featuring as soom as possible, bcos he is the only centre back we have.so as our substitute,he is stil very important to us

This is just an attempt to derail AFC. We can never do anything right in the eyes of some. Improve the quality of the squad then our players are said not to be happy . The other way round then we are paper thin and will be be relegated .I say mind your own teams and if something is up at colney read it from our website we have an excellent way of housekeeping .

Thomas,is still vital to arsenal squad.we have more games to play besides, arsenal needs experienced bench with the right mentality to change game in our favour when need the arises.so ,he has to patient a bit.

I think will still have many games to play,so he still have many chance, take for example, chelsea has terry, luiz, cahill, even ivanovic.still they ae rotating them.likewise man-u,has ferdinand, vidic, smalling, evans, and jones.they did d samething.so why worry,he need to be patient.gunners till I rest in perfect peace.

TV5 is still gunner in the idea of depthness. Arsene have to think of our defence stabitlity who just established by the combination of Koz and Per after long damn experiment.
The current team morality and confidence has reach a high level that never before. This factor have lift up our players performance in all level, the starting, the bench, and even the youth reserve. So, I believe, any time he comes out, TV5 will show why he was Arsene’s first choice to wear the captain armband.

players will come and go but arsenal remains.
To be fair, his chances featuring for belgium are reduced if he appears on the bench all so often…
#ilovearsenal if he leaves,no hard feelings, hes got our support.
