Where should Wenger play our new star?

22596Transfers done and dusted for now and the name on everyone’s lips is undoubtedly Mesut Özil. The second highest fee paid for any player by an English club stands at £42. 4 million and, may I say, with today’s prices, it is money well spent.

Now that we have that out of the way, it’s time to discuss tactics. Özil comes into a squad which boasts high quality in midfield, with the German international the stand out player in the pack alongside Santi Cazorla.

Özil can play out wide, in an attacking midfield position and on either flank, but his natural position is behind the striker, just like Santi Cazorla. The 24-year-old has the ability to play as an inside forward as well, but he will no doubt be played in his most lethal role as an advanced playmaker in that centre attacking midfield position, with many calling him the best number 10 in the world. This no doubt comes from the German’s amazing attributes. His movement off the ball, passing, dribbling, crossing and first touch are second to none. His creativity and decision-making are his stand out qualities. Such is his brilliance that he managed to contribute 47 assists in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, joint highest alongside Lionel Messi.

But where will he fit in exactly?

This is a tricky one. Like I said before, Cazorla and Özil’s natural positions and most effective roles are behind the striker. But there’s no doubt who I’d rather have there more often and that’s Özil.

Considering the fact that Wenger often employs a 4-5-1 system with a man in behind the striker, I’d say Özil should be the man in behind Olivier Giroud, with Cazorla on the wing. This would also suit the Spaniard more due to the fact that he has played there a few times for us already since joining the club. It would be great to see them switch roles and I’m sure Wenger already had this in mind when he signed Mesut.

It will be great to see Mesut in action and I for one cannot wait to see where and how Wenger will play him.

No doubt Wenger faces a few selection headaches as he tries to get the best out of our players. But I’m sure he will enjoy it.

  • Shadow says:

    Giroud

    Carzola/Ozil Ozil/Carzola Walcot

    Ramsey Wilshere/Arteta

    Gibbs/Monreal Koscielny Per Mertesacker Sagna

    Szczesny

    Subs:
Viviano, Podolski, Flamini, Rosicky, TV, Gibbs/Monreal, Ox…

This is my own opinion of the line-ups (assumming full Squad fitness) I see Ozil playing an interchanging role with carzola… I dont think AW would drop Ramsey, So Wilshere and Arteta would fight for starting spot (Ramsey and Wilshere are box-box players so the back 4 are covered) I can’t seem to decide on Gibbs/Monreal when both are fit…

I have a feeling that Wenger will reinvent Ozil at Arsenal. Because of his skills, I feel that Wenger might use him as a roaming player siimilar to how Messi and Ronaldo. I have confidence in Wenger to bring the best out of him.
