Former Gunner left excited yet bemused by Ozil capture

Mesut OzilFormer Arsenal striker believes the Gunners have signed a real gem of a player in Mesut Ozil, but admits he was left bemused at the decision to buy the German playmaker.

The 24-year-old signed for Arsenal on deadline day from Real Madrid for £42.4 million and although Woodcock rates the German international, he reckons the attacking midfield area of Arsene Wenger’s side did not particularly need strengthening.

Woodcock said of Ozil:

‘Mesut is an excellent buy for Arsenal, he is a really good footballer.’

‘But I was left with the feeling that if we really are to push on in the top four and, perhaps, mount some kind of meaningful title challenge, we would have strengthened elsewhere in the squad.

‘It’s an interesting one but, in all honesty, and as exciting as this signing is, I’d really like to have seen Arsene Wenger buy players we really needed.’

I think it’s fair to say that we (the Arsenal faithful) were all shocked to hear that Ozil signed for us on the last day of the summer transfer window. I thought it was a strange buy at first, considering there were other areas that needed attending too. However, Ozil’s capture still shows we are a massive club that can attract the best players in world football.

While many fans were left unhappy with a new striker coming in to help out Olivier Giroud, some fail to realize that with Ozil in Wenger can now utilize either Theo Walcott or Lukas Podolski as a back up option if Giroud becomes jaded or picks up an injury or suspension. So, in my view, it was a great piece of business by Wenger. Though the Frenchman should have probably signed a centre-back!
